Birth Card Calculator: Find Your Tarot Birth Card

Published onJune 10, 2026 Updated onOctober 24, 2026 10:42 am

Every birthday hides a tarot card. This birth card calculator turns your birth date into your Major Arcana birth card, shows each step of the numerology in plain sight, and pairs the card with the companion that shares its theme.

Method used here: month + day + digit-sum of year, reduced to 22 or below (22 = The Fool). Other tarot traditions reduce the digits differently and can honestly give a different card. See why below.

Quick Answer

A birth card comes from simple numerology on your birthday: add your birth month, your birth day, and the digit-sum of your birth year, then reduce the total to 22 or below. For July 14, 1990, that is 7 + 14 + 19 = 40, then 4 + 0 = 4, The Emperor (IV): structure, leadership, and order, paired with its companion card Death (XIII). A total of 22 means The Fool, card 0.

Key takeaways

  • Almost everyone gets two cards: the main birth card plus a companion that shares its numerological root.
  • This calculator adds month + day + digit-sum of year, then reduces to 22 or below (22 = The Fool), and shows every step so you can check it by hand.
  • Several tarot traditions calculate differently, so another birth card calculator can honestly give you a different card. The comparison below shows the main variants side by side.
  • Birth cards describe recurring life themes, not predictions. Readers treat the main card and its companion as one story.

How to use the birth card calculator

Pick your birth date and read the two cards. The results stay hidden until you calculate, and the fields come pre-filled with the worked example so you can try it instantly.

  1. Choose your birth month: the dropdown holds all twelve months. July is pre-filled for the worked example.
  2. Enter your birth day and year: the day runs from 1 to 31 and the year from 1900 to 2099. Anything outside those ranges shows the message “Please enter a valid month, day (1-31), and year (1900-2099).”
  3. Click Calculate my birth card: the card appears with its Major Arcana number, theme, the date you entered, the raw math, the reduced number, and the companion card with its theme.
  4. Copy or share the result with the two buttons under the reading when you want to keep it or send it to someone.

The birth card formula, worked by hand

The calculator runs one small piece of numerology in three steps, and it prints all three so nothing is hidden.

Step 1: year digit-sum = add the four digits of the birth year.
Step 2: raw total = month + day + year digit-sum.
Step 3: keep adding the digits of the total until it is 22 or below. A final 22 counts as The Fool (card 0).

The one thing to be honest about: this is a variant. The most common published methods reduce the whole date’s digits (the Purple Garden guide works July 14, 1990 as 7 + 1 + 4 + 1 + 9 + 9 + 0 = 31, then 3 + 1 = 4), while the method popularized by tarot author Mary K. Greer adds the month, day, and full year as whole numbers and reduces the total (the Arcana Origin calculator documents it as 9 + 1 + 1930 = 1940, then 1 + 9 + 4 + 0 = 14, Temperance). Both of those converge to the same card on most dates, because they are the same digital root. The method here adds the month and day as whole numbers instead, which is easier to check by hand, and it agrees with the common methods on many dates but not all of them. If a date has a two-digit month or day, the cards can differ, which is exactly why the section on other traditions exists below.

Worked example: July 14, 1990

July 14, 1990 is pre-filled in the calculator. Running it gives The Emperor (IV) with Death (XIII) as its companion.

1. Year digits: 1 + 9 + 9 + 0 = 19→ 2. Add: 7 + 14 + 19 = 40→ 3. Reduce: 4 + 0 = 4 → The Emperor (IV)→ 4. Companion: Death (XIII), transformation and rebirth

Two more dates, run through the same three steps, show how the pairing behaves:

  • October 10, 2000: year digits 2 + 0 + 0 + 0 = 2, then 10 + 10 + 2 = 22, which is not reduced further: The Fool (0), new beginnings and pure potential, with The Magician (I) as its companion. This is the date that exposes the variant most clearly: the common digit-sum methods give 1 + 0 + 1 + 0 + 2 + 0 + 0 + 0 = 4, The Emperor, instead.
  • December 31, 1999: year digits 1 + 9 + 9 + 9 = 28, then 12 + 31 + 28 = 71, then 7 + 1 = 8: Strength (VIII), inner strength and courage, with The Star (XVII) as its companion.

Every card and its companion, mapped

The companion is not chosen by mood: it follows the fixed pairing table built into the calculator. Two-digit cards pair with the card their digits reduce to (Death, XIII, reduces to 4, so it pairs with The Emperor, IV). Single-digit cards generally pair with the card nine above them (The Emperor, IV, pairs with Death, XIII). There are four exceptions the table makes explicit: The Magician (I) pairs with The High Priestess (II), The High Priestess (II) pairs with Judgement (XX), the Wheel of Fortune (X) pairs down with The Magician (I), and The Fool (0) pairs with The Magician.

Why other calculators give a different card

Several traditions exist, and each is internally consistent. None of them is wrong; they are different lenses on the same date.

  • Digit-sum of the whole date (Purple Garden’s guide): add every digit of the birth date and reduce. July 14, 1990 becomes 7 + 1 + 4 + 1 + 9 + 9 + 0 = 31, then 3 + 1 = 4, The Emperor.
  • Greer’s whole-number method (documented by the Arcana Origin calculator): add the month, day, and full year as whole numbers, then reduce the digits of that total. September 1, 1930 becomes 9 + 1 + 1930 = 1940, then 1 + 9 + 4 + 0 = 14, Temperance. This is the method Mary K. Greer popularized in Tarot for Your Self, and it also produces the personality card and soul card framing: the reduced card is the personality card, and reducing once more to a single digit gives the soul card. A total of 19 unfolds into three cards in this tradition: The Sun (19), the Wheel of Fortune (10), and The Magician (1).
  • Biddy Tarot’s two methods: the first adds each digit of the date (April 7, 1969 becomes 7 + 4 + 1 + 9 + 6 + 9 = 36, then 3 + 6 = 9, The Hermit); the second, for two cards, adds day + month + 19 + the year’s last two digits, so the same date becomes 7 + 4 + 19 + 69 = 99, then 9 + 9 = 18, The Moon, with 1 + 8 = 9, The Hermit, as the second card.
  • The four-pair method (TwoWander): split the date into four two-digit numbers, month, day, and the year in two halves, and add them. November 6, 1989 becomes 11 + 06 + 19 + 89 = 125, then 12 + 5 = 17, The Star, with 1 + 7 = 8, Strength, as the helper card.
  • This calculator’s method: month + day + digit-sum of the year, as shown in the formula section. It is the simplest to verify by hand, and it agrees with the digit-sum and Greer methods whenever the month and day are single digits, because all three are the same digital root there. When the month or day has two digits, the cards can differ, as the October 10, 2000 example shows.

If you want the numerology behind your whole birth date explored further, the numerology calculator covers life-path and related numbers. And remember that your birth card is not your star sign: your star sign comes from the sun’s position on your birth date, a separate system your rising sign and full birth chart also belong to.

What competing calculators miss

Birth card tools cluster into a few camps, and each leaves something out:

  • Guide-style pages (Biddy Tarot, Purple Garden, TwoWander): thorough explanations of one or two traditions, but no interactive tool on the page. You read the method, then still do the arithmetic by hand.
  • Greer-method calculators (Arcana Origin, SageCalculator): working tools with the personality and soul card framing, but the math happens offstage: you get the cards without the step-by-step working this page prints under every result.
  • Spread-style calculators with helper cards: rich card combinations and meanings, yet the pairing rules are described in prose rather than enforced by the tool, so a hand slip changes your reading.
  • The gap this page fills: the three-step math printed with every result, the fixed companion pairing shown alongside the main card, validation that rejects impossible dates with a clear message, and an explicit statement of which method variant is in use, so a different result elsewhere never looks like an error.

Frequently asked questions

Add your birth month, your birth day, and the digit-sum of your birth year, then keep adding the digits of the total until it is 22 or below. That number maps to a Major Arcana card, with 22 counting as The Fool. For July 14, 1990: 7 + 14 + 19 = 40, then 4 + 0 = 4, The Emperor.

Most dates produce a main card plus a companion card that shares its numerological root, and readers interpret the pair as one story. The Emperor (IV), for example, arrives with Death (XIII), because 1 + 3 = 4: structure on one side, the endings that reshape it on the other.

It means your date reduced to exactly 22, which this calculator maps to card 0, The Fool: new beginnings, freedom, and pure potential. Its companion in this calculator’s pairing is The Magician. October 10, 2000 is one date that lands here.

A companion card is the fixed partner this calculator shows beside your main card, from the pairing table above. A soul card is a different concept from Mary K. Greer’s tradition: the personality card reduced once more to a single digit, describing the quieter inner drive. The two ideas overlap but they are not the same system.

Because traditions reduce the date differently. This page uses month + day + digit-sum of year. Other calculators use the digit-sum of the whole date, Greer’s whole-number method, or the four-pair method. Each is internally consistent, so a different method honestly produces a different card on dates with a two-digit month or day.

No. Your zodiac sign comes from the sun’s position on your birth date; your birth card comes from numerology on the date’s digits. They are independent systems that some readers enjoy comparing side by side.
