Star Sign Calculator
Pick your birth month and day and this calculator returns your star sign: its name, its symbol, its date range and its element. It uses the standard tropical zodiac ranges, so July 10 comes out as Cancer and March 25 as Aries, with no birth year, birth time or location needed. If you want the parts of the chart that do need a birth time, the ascendant calculator and the rising signs calculator are the natural next stops, and the moon phase compatibility calculator covers the lunar side of the chart.
The sign comes from the standard tropical zodiac date ranges. Boundary dates can shift by about a day depending on the birth year. If your birthday is flagged as a cusp birthday below, check an ephemeris for your birth year before treating the sign as certain.
Quick Answer
Born on July 10? Your star sign is Cancer ĈB;, covering June 21 to July 22, and its element is Water. That birthday is pre-filled in the calculator: press Find my star sign and you get the symbol, the date range, the element and the two signs that share your element.
Key takeaways
- Twelve signs, each spanning roughly 30 days on fixed date ranges. The sign is decided by month and day alone.
- Every sign carries a symbol, a date range and one of four elements: Fire, Earth, Air or Water. The result's reading tells you which two signs share your element.
- No birth year, birth time or location is needed here. Anything asking for those is computing something else, like a rising sign.
- Boundary birthdays can shift by about a day depending on the year, so the tool's fixed ranges are right for the vast middle of each sign and approximate on the exact cusp.
- The day field is checked against the real calendar for the month, so an impossible date like February 30 is rejected with an error instead of returning a sign. February 29 is accepted, since it exists in leap years.

How to use the star sign calculator
Choose a month, type a day, click Find my star sign. The result stays hidden until you calculate, and Reset returns the fields to the July 10 example.
- Pick your birth month: July is pre-selected. The month narrows it to two candidate signs, since every sign boundary falls inside a month.
- Type your birth day: 10 is pre-filled. Any real calendar day for the chosen month works (February allows up to 29); anything else shows the message "Please enter a valid day".
- Read the four-part result: the sign's symbol at large size, its name, its full date range and its element, plus a reading naming the two signs that share your element.
- Copy or share: the buttons beside the result copy a one-line summary such as "Cancer ĈB; (June 21 - July 22), Element: Water".
One correction to the old version of this page: it described birth year, birth time and location as inputs and personality traits as an output. None of those ever existed in the tool. The inputs were always month and day, and the outputs were always sign, symbol, dates and element, exactly as the calculator above works now.
The 12 star signs: dates, symbols and elements
The twelve signs below use the standard tropical zodiac date ranges, the set the great majority of Western astrology references agree on. Find your birth month and day in the ranges to see where you land before you even touch the calculator.
| Sign | Symbol | Date range | Element |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | | March 21 - April 19 | Fire |
| Taurus | ਖ਼ | April 20 - May 20 | Earth |
| Gemini | ਗ਼ | May 21 - June 20 | Air |
| Cancer | ĈB; | June 21 - July 22 | Water |
| Leo | ĈC; | July 23 - August 22 | Fire |
| Virgo | ĈD; | August 23 - September 22 | Earth |
| Libra | ĈE; | September 23 - October 22 | Air |
| Scorpio | ĈF; | October 23 - November 21 | Water |
| Sagittarius | ਗ਼ | November 22 - December 21 | Fire |
| Capricorn | ਜ਼ | December 22 - January 19 | Earth |
| Aquarius | ੜ | January 20 - February 18 | Air |
| Pisces | | February 19 - March 20 | Water |
These ranges are the majority consensus across Western astrology references. The Old Farmer's Almanac's zodiac tables print one-day variants on a few boundaries (April 20 instead of April 19 for the Aries changeover, for example), which is exactly why the cusp section below matters for boundary birthdays: no fixed table is authoritative to the single day.
Worked example: July 10 is Cancer
July 10 falls inside June 21 to July 22, so the sign is Cancer ĈB;, a Water sign. The calculator walks the same path: month 7 narrows it to Cancer-or-Leo, and day 10 lands on the Cancer side of the July 22 boundary.
A few more dates, each one a real run of the calculator you can reproduce by typing the month and day:
| Birthday | Star sign | Symbol | Element |
|---|---|---|---|
| January 15 | Capricorn | ਜ਼ | Earth |
| March 25 | Aries | | Fire |
| May 5 | Taurus | ਖ਼ | Earth |
| July 10 | Cancer | ĈB; | Water |
| October 31 | Scorpio | ĈF; | Water |
| December 25 | Capricorn | ਜ਼ | Earth |
What the four elements mean
Each element groups three signs that the tradition reads as sharing a temperament. Fire (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) is the element of initiative and drive; Earth (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn) the element of the practical and tangible; Air (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius) the element of ideas and communication; Water (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) the element of feeling and intuition.
This is exactly what the result's reading badge is for: it names the two signs that share your element, so a Cancer result also points you at Scorpio and Pisces. The element groupings are the traditional ones repeated across the references, from the Old Farmer's Almanac to modern sign-by-sign guides. Treat them as the symbolic language astrology speaks, not as measured facts: astrology is a system of interpretation, and NASA's long-standing position, restated every time the zodiac story resurfaces, is that astrology is not astronomy.
Cusp birthdays: when the boundary moves
If you were born on or within a day of a sign boundary, the tool's answer is approximate, because the real changeover shifts by about a day from year to year. The calculator uses the fixed standard ranges, which are exact for the middle of every sign and can be off by one sign on the exact cusp in some years. The result now flags cusp birthdays directly: any first or last day of a sign's range carries a cusp note, so a boundary date is never presented as certain.
The classic trouble dates are the ones where publishers themselves disagree: March 20/21 (Pisces/Aries), April 19/20 (Aries/Taurus), May 20/21 (Taurus/Gemini), June 20/21 (Gemini/Cancer), October 22/23 (Libra/Scorpio) and the rest of the boundaries in the table above. If your birthday is one of these, the honest move is to check an ephemeris or birth-chart service for your birth year rather than trusting any fixed-range tool, this one included. For everyone else, the fixed ranges and the calculator agree completely.
Star signs are not constellations
The zodiac signs are twelve equal 30-degree segments of the ecliptic, anchored to the March equinox. The constellations are irregular groups of stars with unequal boundaries, and they are not the same thing. That distinction is behind two recurring confusions worth clearing up.
First, precession: Earth's axis wobbles on a roughly 26,000-year cycle, shifting the equinox point about one degree every 72 years, so the constellations have drifted about a whole sign away from the tropical zodiac since it was codified. Your sign has not changed; the sky behind it has. Second, Ophiuchus: the Sun does pass through a thirteenth constellation, Ophiuchus, for about 18 days each year, but it was deliberately left out of the twelve-sign system millennia ago and it is not a star sign. The Farmers' Almanac's astrology-versus-astronomy explainer walks through the tropical-versus-sidereal split, and the NASA clarification that it is built on, "we didn't change any zodiac signs, we just did the math," is worth reading before forwarding the next viral version of the story.
What competing calculators miss
Star sign tools split into three camps, and each leaves something on the table:
- Dual-system tools (calculators.im, smartonlinecalculator and similar): Western and Chinese zodiac from one birth date. Useful breadth, but the Western result is usually just a name: no element, no symbol, nothing about what the sign means.
- Rich-profile tools (horocalc and similar): Sun, Moon and rising signs plus ruling planets and lucky colors in one click. The catch they rarely flag: Moon and rising signs need birth time and location, so without them those extra results are approximations dressed as certainties.
- Explainer-first pages (authorityastrology's sun-sign page): decent background on what the sign means, but the tool itself is an afterthought and the naming blurs together concepts this site keeps on separate pages.
- The gap this page fills: sign, symbol, date range and element in one result, with the element reading wired in so you immediately see your sign's two element-mates; the full twelve-sign reference table on the same page; honest cusp guidance instead of false certainty on boundary dates; impossible dates rejected outright rather than silently returning a sign; and the constellation-versus-sign distinction spelled out, Ophiuchus included.
Frequently asked questions
Your star sign is the zodiac sign assigned to your birth month and day in the tropical zodiac: twelve roughly 30-day segments of the year, each with a name, a symbol, a date range and an element. Enter July 10 and you get Cancer; enter March 25 and you get Aries.
Aries (March 21 - April 19), Taurus (April 20 - May 20), Gemini (May 21 - June 20), Cancer (June 21 - July 22), Leo (July 23 - August 22), Virgo (August 23 - September 22), Libra (September 23 - October 22), Scorpio (October 23 - November 21), Sagittarius (November 22 - December 21), Capricorn (December 22 - January 19), Aquarius (January 20 - February 18), Pisces (February 19 - March 20). The full table with symbols and elements is above.
Fire (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) stands for initiative and drive; Earth (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn) for the practical and tangible; Air (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius) for ideas and communication; Water (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) for feeling and intuition. The calculator's reading names the two signs that share your element.
The calculator uses fixed standard ranges, so a cusp birthday gets the sign whose range contains it, and the result flags it as a cusp birthday. In reality the changeover shifts by about a day depending on the birth year, so if you were born on a boundary date, check an ephemeris for your birth year for the definitive answer.
The tool rejects it. February has at most 29 days, so February 30 (and February 31, April 31 and similar impossible dates) show the message "Please enter a valid day" and return no sign. February 29 is accepted because it exists in leap years.
Not for your star sign: month and day are enough. Birth year drives the Chinese zodiac, and birth time plus location drive the rising sign, which is why the ascendant calculator asks for more. This tool deliberately stays with month and day.
A star sign is one of twelve equal 30-degree segments of the ecliptic, anchored to the March equinox. Constellations are irregular star groups with unequal boundaries. Precession has shifted the constellations about a whole sign away from the zodiac since it was codified, and Ophiuchus, a real thirteenth constellation on the ecliptic, was never made a sign.
No. Astrology is a symbolic system of interpretation, not a science, and NASA's position whenever the zodiac story resurfaces is that astrology is not astronomy. Use your sign as entertainment or a prompt for reflection, not as evidence about personality or the future.
