Lunar Sign Calculator

Published onMay 21, 2026 Updated onOctober 24, 2026 4:45 pm

This calculator finds your Western moon sign: the zodiac sign the Moon was actually in at the moment you were born. Enter your birth date, birth time, birthplace and the UTC offset in force at your birth, and it computes the Moon’s ecliptic longitude from real lunar astronomy and reads the sign from that longitude. The Moon moves about 13 degrees a day, so it changes sign roughly every two and a half days: a birth time that is a few hours out can give a different sign, which is why time and offset matter here.

One honest limit before you start: this page was rebuilt. It used to return a Chinese zodiac year animal from your birth year alone. That is a different system, and this tool no longer returns it. If you want the year animal, it depends on the lunar new year, not on the Moon’s position in the sky, and it is covered briefly near the end of this page.

Your Western moon sign from birth date, time and place, by real lunar longitude
Your moon sign

Western tropical astrology, for entertainment and personal interest. The sign comes from the Moon’s computed ecliptic longitude at your birth moment. Near a sign boundary, a small error in time or offset can change the sign, and the tool warns you when that applies.

Quick Answer

For the pre-filled birth moment, 15 June 2000 at 12:00 in London with a UTC offset of +1, which is 11:00 UTC, the Moon is in Sagittarius at 8.42 degrees (ecliptic longitude 248.42 degrees). Change the time or the offset and the longitude moves with it: that is the whole point of a true moon-sign calculation, and the reason the old year-only tool could not answer this question.

Key takeaways

  • A Western moon sign is the Moon’s zodiac sign at your birth moment, from birth date, birth time and place. A year alone cannot give it, because the Moon changes sign roughly every two and a half days.
  • Birthplace matters through the UTC offset: the same clock time in London in June (+1) and in January (0) converts to different UTC moments, and therefore to different Moon positions.
  • This tool uses the tropical zodiac, the Western system. The sidereal system used in Vedic astrology is offset from it, so the same birth moment can give a different sign there.
  • Near a sign boundary, trust the warning, not the headline: if the Moon sits within 2 degrees of a boundary, a few hours of time or offset error can change the sign.

How to use the lunar sign calculator

Enter your birth date, then your birth time in local time at your birthplace, then the birthplace itself, then the UTC offset that applied there on that date. Click Calculate and read the sign, the Moon’s longitude in degrees, and how far into the sign the Moon sits. Results stay hidden until you calculate. Copy and share buttons sit inside the results box.

  • Birth date: year, month and day. Years from 1900 to 2100 are accepted, matching the stated range of the day-number method used here.
  • Birth time: hour and minute on the 24-hour clock, in local time at the birthplace. If your birth time is genuinely unknown, the honest answer is that the sign is uncertain whenever the Moon was near a boundary that day; running the tool at the start and end of the day shows whether the sign is stable or not.
  • Birthplace and UTC offset: type the place, then enter its offset from UTC on the birth date, including daylight saving if it applied. This tool has no timezone database, so it cannot look the offset up from the place name: the offset box is where that knowledge goes in. A wrong offset shifts the whole calculation by the same amount, so this is the input most worth double-checking. The moon phase compatibility calculator covers the separate question of how two Moon positions relate.
  • Read the warning: a boundary warning means the result is fragile, not wrong. Confirm the time from a birth record and the offset for the place and date before treating a boundary sign as settled.

How the sign is worked out

There is no lookup table here. The tool computes where the Moon was, then reads the sign off that position.

Step 1, local time to UTC. Birth time minus the UTC offset gives the birth moment in UTC. The pre-filled example, 12:00 at offset +1, becomes 11:00 UTC.

Step 2, day number. From the UTC date and time the tool forms the day count used by the standard low-precision planetary method, counting days from 2000 Jan 0.0 UT with integer division in the calendar terms.

Step 3, lunar orbit. From the day count it takes the Moon’s orbital elements, node, inclination, argument of perihelion, semi-major axis, eccentricity and mean anomaly, solves Kepler’s equation approximately for the eccentric anomaly, and converts the orbital position to ecliptic longitude. The elements and the perturbation terms below come from the published low-precision method referenced at the end of this page.

Step 4, perturbations. The raw longitude is corrected with the main lunar perturbation terms, including the evection, the variation and the yearly equation. These corrections are what separate a real lunar position from a simple circular-orbit guess, which would be degrees out.

Step 5, longitude to sign. The tropical zodiac divides the ecliptic into twelve 30-degree signs starting at 0 degrees Aries. Dividing the longitude by 30 gives the sign, and the remainder gives the degree inside the sign. Longitude 248.42 degrees falls in the 240 to 270 degree span, which is Sagittarius, at 8.42 degrees into it.

Accuracy, stated plainly. During testing, this implementation was compared with an independent ephemeris on ten moments between 1990 and 2026. Every sign agreed, and the largest longitude difference was 0.39 degrees. That is why the boundary warning is set at 2 degrees: it covers both the method’s own error and a plausible time or offset error of a few hours, since the Moon moves about half a degree an hour. It does not cover a wrong offset of a whole time zone, which shifts the result by roughly half a sign.

Worked examples, checked against published sign calendars

Three birth moments, each checked against published moon-sign calendars as well as the independent ephemeris used in testing. All three sit well inside their signs, so no boundary warning applies to them.

Birth moment enteredUTC momentTool result
15 June 2000, 12:00, London, offset +1 (the pre-filled example)11:00 UTCSagittarius, 8.42 degrees (longitude 248.42)
1 January 1990, 12:00, offset 012:00 UTCPisces, 3.31 degrees (longitude 333.31)
1 January 2024, 00:00, offset 000:00 UTCVirgo, 6.01 degrees (longitude 156.01)

The January 1990 case is a useful sanity check on motion: published calendars put the Moon in Pisces through 1 and 2 January and moving into Aries during 3 January, which matches a longitude near the start of Pisces at noon on 1 January moving about 13 degrees a day. The January 2024 case matches the same way: Virgo on 1 and 2 January, moving into Libra during 3 January.

The 12 signs, their longitude spans and their elements

The tropical zodiac is a division of the sky, not a set of calendar dates: the Moon enters each sign whenever its longitude crosses the boundary, which happens on different dates each month. The table gives the span and the traditional element for each sign.

What about the Chinese zodiac animal?

The Chinese zodiac year animal is a different system from the Western moon sign, and the two must not be confused. The year animal changes once a year, at the lunar new year, and it is read from the birth year alone. The moon sign changes roughly every two and a half days and needs the full birth moment. This page used to return the year animal; after the rebuild it returns only the moon sign. If you were looking for the year animal, that question belongs to a Chinese zodiac tool, not to this one, and no result on this page should be read as one.

What competing calculators miss

Most moon-sign tools get the headline right and hide the fragile parts. The gaps worth knowing about:

  • Time treated as optional. Tools that ask only for a birth date cannot compute a moon sign at all: they are either returning a sun sign, a year animal, or a noon approximation without saying so. A tool that does not ask for time is not doing this calculation.
  • Timezone treated as magic. Tools that take a place name and silently convert it hide the daylight-saving question. This tool goes the other way: it asks you for the offset, so the conversion is visible and checkable, at the cost of one extra input. If a rival tool gives a different sign for the same birth moment, the offset it assumed is the first thing to compare.
  • No boundary honesty. A sign result with no longitude and no warning hides exactly the cases where the answer is uncertain. This tool prints the longitude and the degree inside the sign, and warns within 2 degrees of a boundary, so a fragile result looks fragile.
  • Sun sign confusion. The familiar star sign is the Sun’s sign, from the birth date alone. The moon sign is a separate placement in the same zodiac, and the two together with the rising sign make up the set most birth-chart tools report. The rising signs calculator, the sun moon rising calculator and the star sign calculator cover those neighbouring questions.

Frequently asked questions

Your moon sign is the zodiac sign the Moon was in at your birth moment, in the Western tropical zodiac. It is computed from the Moon’s ecliptic longitude at that moment: each sign covers 30 degrees of longitude, so the longitude decides the sign.

Because the Moon moves about 13 degrees a day, or about half a degree an hour, and a sign is only 30 degrees wide. The Moon spends roughly two and a half days in each sign, so a birth time that is hours out only matters near a boundary, but near a boundary it is decisive. A date-only tool cannot answer this question.

Because this tool has no timezone database, and the offset in force on a birth date depends on the place and on daylight saving at the time. Asking for the offset keeps the conversion visible: you can check it for your place and date instead of trusting a hidden assumption. Enter the offset that applied at birth, not the offset that applies today.

The method is a published low-precision lunar calculation with the main perturbation terms included. In testing against an independent ephemeris on ten moments between 1990 and 2026, every sign agreed and the largest longitude difference was 0.39 degrees. The tool warns within 2 degrees of a sign boundary to cover that error plus a plausible time or offset error.

No. This tool uses the Western tropical zodiac, whose signs are fixed to the seasons. The sidereal system used in Vedic astrology is offset from the tropical system, so the same birth moment can give a different sign there. Do not compare a result from this tool directly with a sidereal chart.

It was removed when this page was rebuilt as a true moon-sign calculator. The year animal belongs to a different system: it changes once a year at the lunar new year and is read from the birth year alone, while the moon sign changes every two and a half days and needs the full birth moment. This page now returns only the moon sign.
