How to use the profection year calculator
Enter your date of birth, then either leave the target year blank for the current year or type a specific year to look at a past or future profection year. Press Calculate. You get four things: your age in that profection year, the activated house number, the house name with its traditional themes, and the exact birthday-to-birthday period the year covers.
The worked example is already filled in: birth date June 15, 1990, target year 2026. One honest note before you start: unlike a full chart reading, this tool never asks for your rising sign, so it cannot tell you the activated zodiac sign or the year's ruling planet. What it can do, it does instantly, and the section below explains exactly what it cannot.
The profection formula: your age, divided by twelve
The entire technique is one line of arithmetic:
Profection House = (Age mod 12) + 1
Age 0 begins in the 1st house, age 1 moves to the 2nd, and so on through the 12th house at age 11. At age 12 the cycle restarts at the 1st house. The AstroTwins' reference table follows exactly this convention: ages 0, 12, 24 and 36 are all 1st-house years. The calculator above implements the same mapping, which is also the one Chris Brennan teaches as the standard Hellenistic method.
A minority of online guides use a different convention, mapping the remainder directly so that a remainder of 0 means the 12th house. The two conventions agree on eleven years out of twelve and disagree only at exact multiples of twelve: age 36 is a 1st-house year here and a 12th-house year there. If you learned profections from a guide that counts that way, now you know why your number may differ by one house at those ages. For consistency with the published Hellenistic sources, this page stays with the (age mod 12) + 1 convention.

What this calculator does not do
Honesty first, because the old version of this page promised more than the tool delivers. The previous prose claimed the calculator identifies your "time lord planet", "activated zodiac sign" and "previous and next profection years" from your "rising sign or house system information". None of that is true of the tool: it has no rising-sign input, so it cannot know which sign sits on the activated house or which planet rules it. Those outputs were never computed; the claims have been removed.
What remains is the part the tool does genuinely well, and it is the part most people actually want: your activated house number, its traditional themes, and your exact birthday-to-birthday period, from your birth date alone. What other profection calculators miss
I ran the tools ranking for this keyword before rewriting the page. Each one has a real gap:
- Astrology-Seek's profection calculator is the serious option: it takes your rising sign and returns the activated sign plus the time-lord planet. The gap is effort: you need your birth time and a cast chart before it tells you anything, so there is no instant answer for the merely curious.
- MadeCalculators' profection tool asks only for birth year and current year and returns a number from 0 to 11. No house names, no themes, no period dates, and the page pads itself with unrelated "use cases" like calculating retirement age. The math is the easy tenth of the job; the interpretation is missing.
- Astro-Seek's profections page is the professional workstation: annual profections combined with firdaria, zodiacal releasing and decennials on a full wheel chart. Powerful, and completely overwhelming if you only wanted to know which house this year is.
- Selfgazer's guide teaches the manual division method well but ships no tool at all, and as noted above it uses the minority remainder convention, so its house numbers disagree with the standard method at ages 12, 24, 36 and beyond.
- The AstroTwins' guide has the clearest age-to-house table anywhere and a good video walkthrough, but again no calculator: you do the counting yourself.

Take your completed age, divide by 12, keep the remainder, and add 1. At age 36: 36 mod 12 = 0, plus 1 = House 1. At age 29: 29 mod 12 = 5, plus 1 = House 6. The calculator does this automatically from your birth date, with a birthday adjustment when you leave the target year blank.
Your birthday. Each profection year runs from one birthday to the day before the next, which is why the calculator shows an exact period like "Jun 15, 2026 to Jun 14, 2027" instead of a calendar year. Two people born in the same year but in different months are in different profection years for part of every year.
Because it only computes the house number, its name, its themes and the period, none of which need the rising sign. The rising sign is required for the next layer: which zodiac sign sits on the activated house and which planet rules it. A birth-date-only tool that claimed to give you those would be guessing.
The time lord (chronocrator) is the planet ruling the sign on your activated house: the planet "in charge" of the year. You cannot find it on this page, because identifying the activated sign requires your rising sign, which needs your birth time and place. On this calculator, and in the standard Hellenistic method taught by Chris Brennan and the AstroTwins, age 36 is a 1st-house year: (36 mod 12) + 1 = 1, the start of a new twelve-year cycle. A minority of online guides map a remainder of 0 to the 12th house instead, which is why you may see 12th-house answers elsewhere for ages 12, 24, 36 and other exact multiples of twelve.
The age goes negative and the house math breaks down, so enter a target year on or after your birth year. The target-year field is meant for looking at past or future profection years within your lifetime, not before it.
Traditionally, yes. Annual profections come from Hellenistic astrology, where the standard was whole sign houses: each sign is one house, counted from the rising sign. This calculator works at the house-number level, so it is compatible with that system by construction; it does not implement quadrant house division because the house count does not need it.
