2. Enter your time of birth in 24-hour format: this is the input that matters most, because the ascendant advances roughly one degree every four minutes. Check your birth certificate or hospital record rather than guessing.

An honest note on the latitude box: latitude is now a first-order input, not a decoration. The formula below puts it inside the ascendant calculation itself, which is why the same birth moment gives a different sign at the equator, in New York, and at latitude 60.

The formula: the standard ascendant calculation

The ascendant is the ecliptic longitude on the eastern horizon at your birth moment. This calculator computes it with the standard spherical-astronomy formula, in five steps:

1. Local mean time to Universal Time. UT = entered time − longitude ÷ 15. Your entered time is treated as local mean time from your longitude, because this form has no time-zone database. If daylight saving applied at your birthplace, clock time differs from mean time by up to about an hour plus the local offset from the zone meridian, so results within a degree or two of a sign boundary deserve a second check against chart software with your exact time zone.
2. Julian day. The UT date and time convert to a Julian day number (JD).
3. Greenwich Mean Sidereal Time. GMST = 280.46061837 + 360.98564736629 × (JD − 2451545.0) + 0.000387933 × T² − T³ ÷ 38710000, with T = (JD − 2451545.0) ÷ 36525, taken mod 360.
4. Local sidereal time. LST = GMST + longitude, mod 360.
5. Ascendant. Asc = atan2(cos LST, −(sin LST × cos ε + tan φ × sin ε)), mod 360, with ε = 23.4392911° (the obliquity of the ecliptic) and φ = your latitude. Sign = floor(Asc ÷ 30); degree = Asc − 30 × sign.

Latitude is not a refinement here; it is inside the formula. The same birth moment (January 1, 1990, 2:30 PM local mean time, longitude −74.00) gives a different ascendant at every latitude:

One birth moment, three different signs from latitude alone. A dead latitude input could not be a minor gap: near a sign boundary it returned the wrong sign outright. Two honesty notes remain. At extreme polar latitudes the horizon and ecliptic geometry breaks down and any ascendant figure is indicative only. And astrology itself is an interpretive tradition, not a science: the astronomy above is precise, the meanings attached to the signs are symbolic.

Worked example, checked against this exact tool

Someone born in New York City on January 1, 1990 at 2:30 PM (latitude 40.71, longitude −74.00) types those values into the pre-filled form and clicks Calculate rising sign. The tool returns Gemini 10.7°, and here is the arithmetic it performs:

1. Local mean time to UT: 14:30 − (−74.00 ÷ 15) = 14.5 + 4.933 = 19.433 hours UT (7:26 PM UT on January 1).
2. Julian day: 2447893.3097.
3. Greenwich Mean Sidereal Time: 32.68°.
4. Local sidereal time: 32.68 + (−74.00) = 318.68°.
5. Ascendant from the formula with latitude 40.71°: 70.7°, which is Gemini (60° to 90°) at 10.7° into the sign.
