Sun Sign Calculator

Published onJune 4, 2026 Updated onOctober 24, 2026 9:49 pm

Your sun sign is the zodiac sign the Sun was in on the day you were born, read on the tropical (Western) zodiac: the seasonal system used by Western astrology, in which Aries begins at the March equinox. Enter your birth month and day below and the calculator returns your sign, its dates, its element and quality, and the traditional traits attached to it, with no birth time or birthplace needed.

Sun Sign Calculator

Tropical (Western) zodiac only. This tool does not use the sidereal zodiac, and it does not tell you the constellation the Sun stood in front of on your birth date. Those are different systems, and the difference is explained below.

Dates:

Element and quality:

Key traits:

Basis: tropical (Western) zodiac.

Boundary day: this birthday sits on the first or last day of its sign range. On the fixed tropical calendar used here that still gives one clear sign, but the exact moment the Sun changes signs shifts slightly by year and time zone, so a full chart with birth time is the only way to settle a boundary case exactly.

Quick Answer

Enter your birth month and day and the calculator gives your tropical sun sign at once. For the worked example pre-filled above, November 5 falls in October 23 to November 21, so the answer is Scorpio: a Water sign of Fixed quality, described as passionate, resourceful, determined, intense, mysterious, and powerful.

The 12 tropical sun signs at a glance

The table below is the whole lookup the calculator performs, in one place. Find your birth month and day, read across, and you have the same answer the tool gives. The dates are the conventional tropical ranges used across Western astrology reference tables; the symbols, elements, qualities and traits are the ones the calculator returns.

SignTropical datesElement and qualityKey traits
Aries ♈March 21 – April 19Fire, CardinalBold, ambitious, confident, enthusiastic, courageous, passionate
Taurus ♉April 20 – May 20Earth, FixedReliable, patient, practical, devoted, stable, sensual
Gemini ♊May 21 – June 20Air, MutableCurious, adaptable, communicative, witty, versatile, intellectual
Cancer ♋June 21 – July 22Water, CardinalNurturing, emotional, protective, intuitive, loyal, sympathetic
Leo ♌July 23 – August 22Fire, FixedConfident, generous, creative, charismatic, warm-hearted, dramatic
Virgo ♍August 23 – September 22Earth, MutableAnalytical, practical, hardworking, detail-oriented, modest, helpful
Libra ♎September 23 – October 22Air, CardinalDiplomatic, fair-minded, social, gracious, cooperative, balanced
Scorpio ♏October 23 – November 21Water, FixedPassionate, resourceful, determined, intense, mysterious, powerful
Sagittarius ♐November 22 – December 21Fire, MutableOptimistic, adventurous, philosophical, freedom-loving, honest, enthusiastic
Capricorn ♑December 22 – January 19Earth, CardinalDisciplined, ambitious, responsible, practical, patient, self-controlled
Aquarius ♒January 20 – February 18Air, FixedIndependent, innovative, humanitarian, intellectual, original, progressive
Pisces ♓February 19 – March 20Water, MutableCompassionate, artistic, intuitive, gentle, wise, empathetic

Two patterns in that table are worth noticing, because they explain most of the language around sun signs. Each element appears three times, once in each quality, and each quality appears four times, once in each element. Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn open the seasons; Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius sit in the middle of them; Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces close them. That grid, not any single sign, is the system.

Tropical, not sidereal: why another site can give you a different sign

The tropical zodiac is anchored to the seasons. Its zero point is the March equinox, the moment the Sun crosses the celestial equator heading north, and that point is always called 0 degrees Aries. The twelve signs are then twelve equal 30 degree slices of the ecliptic, the Sun’s apparent yearly path, counted from that seasonal anchor. Aries therefore always starts with northern spring, Cancer with northern summer, Libra with northern autumn, and Capricorn with northern winter, whatever stars happen to sit behind the Sun that year.

The sidereal zodiac works the other way round. It is anchored to the fixed stars, so it tracks where the Sun actually appears against the constellations, and it corrects for the slow wobble of Earth’s axis known as the precession of the equinoxes. Because that wobble has been shifting the equinox point for roughly two thousand years, the two systems have drifted apart by about 24 degrees, which is close to one whole sign. A person whose tropical Sun sign is Taurus will often find a sidereal Sun sign of Aries, and that is not an error in either tool. It is two different rulers laid over the same sky. If you want the star-based answer, use our sidereal zodiac calculator and compare the two results side by side rather than treating one as a correction of the other.

This page also has nothing to do with daylight or sunshine. It does not measure how long the Sun is up, when it rises, or how much sunlight a place receives. Those are astronomy and weather questions with different tools; this one answers a single astrology question, which seasonal sign was the Sun in on a birth date.

How the calculator reads your birth date

There is no arithmetic formula here, and that is worth saying plainly. The tool does a date-range lookup: it takes the month and day you enter, walks the twelve ranges in order, and returns the first range that contains your date. Capricorn is the only range that wraps around the new year, running from December 22 to January 19, and the tool handles that wrap rather than treating January as a separate case.

Birth year is offered on the form because the older version of this page asked for it, but in this tool it does not change the answer. That is a deliberate piece of honesty, not an oversight. Some competing calculators use the birth year, and sometimes the birth time, to work out the exact moment the Sun crossed from one sign into the next in that particular year. This calculator does not do that: it applies the fixed tropical calendar ranges shown in the table above. If your birthday is nowhere near a boundary, the distinction does not matter. If it is on a boundary day, read the cusp section below before treating the result as final.

The tool also checks that the date can exist. February 30 is refused, April 31 is refused, and February 29 is accepted, since it occurs in leap years and falls inside Pisces. An empty month or day produces a plain error message instead of a blank result, which the older version of this page did not do.

Worked examples, including the boundary days

The pre-filled example is November 5. November sits in the second half of the Scorpio range, October 23 to November 21, so the answer is Scorpio, Water and Fixed, with the traits listed in the Quick Answer box. Try the boundaries yourself and the pattern becomes clear at once.

  • April 19 gives Aries, the last day of the Aries range. April 20 gives Taurus, the first day of the next range. There is no gap and no overlap between them.
  • December 21 gives Sagittarius; December 22 gives Capricorn, the sign that carries across the new year into January 19.
  • March 20 gives Pisces, the last sign of the cycle; March 21 gives Aries again, and the cycle restarts.
  • February 29 gives Pisces, since February 19 to March 20 covers every possible leap day.
  • August 10, the example the older version of this page used, gives Leo, since July 23 to August 22 contains it.

Every one of those results can be checked against the table above without running the tool at all. That is the point: a lookup tool should be checkable by hand, and if a result ever disagrees with the table, the table is the thing to trust and the tool is the thing to fix.

Elements and qualities, and what they do not prove

The four elements group the signs by temperament in the traditional language of astrology. Fire signs (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) are described in terms of energy, drive and action. Earth signs (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn) are described in terms of practicality, stability and responsibility. Air signs (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius) are described in terms of communication, ideas and intellect. Water signs (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) are described in terms of emotion, intuition and sensitivity. The three qualities cut across them: Cardinal signs initiate, Fixed signs sustain, and Mutable signs adapt.

Takeaway

  • Element answers “what kind of energy”: Fire, Earth, Air or Water.
  • Quality answers “how that energy moves”: Cardinal (starting), Fixed (holding), or Mutable (changing).
  • Together they give twelve combinations, which is why no two signs share both an element and a quality.
  • None of this is a personality test result. Two people born under the same sign will differ, and the traits are traditional descriptions, not measured findings.

That last point matters for how this page should be used. Astrology is a symbolic tradition, not an empirical science: astronomers study the actual positions of celestial bodies, while astrology interprets those positions as meaningful for human affairs, a claim that has not survived scientific testing. The calculator is therefore best treated as a cultural lookup, the same way you would look up a birthstone or a Chinese zodiac animal, and not as evidence about what someone is like. If a trait list feels wrong for you, the trait list is wrong for you; it does not mean your birth date was entered incorrectly.

Sun sign, moon sign and rising sign: the big three

A sun sign is only one part of a birth chart, and it is the part most people meet first because it needs only a birth date. The moon sign, which needs a birth date and ideally a birth time, is traditionally read as emotional life and inner needs. The rising sign, or ascendant, needs a birth time and a birthplace as well, and is traditionally read as first impressions and outward manner. Together the three are often called the big three, and a chart that contains only the sun sign is a summary, not a full reading.

If you want all three in one place, our sun moon rising calculator covers the set, and it will show you how much more information a birth time adds. The distinction also explains a common confusion: two people can share a sun sign and still read very differently in a full chart, because their moon and rising signs differ. Nothing in this page contradicts that; it simply does not compute those two signs.

Cusp birthdays: the honest limit of a date-only tool

A cusp birthday is a birthday on, or very near, the day the Sun changes signs. April 19 and 20, June 20 and 21, and the other boundary pairs in the table are the obvious cases. Popular astrology sometimes talks about cusp babies as a blend of two signs, but in the tropical system there is no blend: at any given moment the Sun is in exactly one 30 degree slice. The question is only which side of the boundary that moment fell on.

That moment does not fall at midnight, and it does not fall on the same calendar date every year. Leap-year patterns and the exact timing of the seasonal cycle move it by hours, and occasionally by a full calendar day, and time zone then decides which calendar date a birth in a particular place falls on. A date-only tool using fixed ranges, including this one, therefore gives the standard calendar answer for a boundary birthday, and it flags the result as a boundary day so you know to check further. For a boundary birthday that matters to you, the next step is a full chart calculation with birth year, exact birth time and birthplace, not a second date-only calculator, which will simply repeat the same fixed table.

What other sun sign calculators get wrong or leave out

We checked the tools that currently rank for this query before rewriting this page, and the gaps were consistent rather than dramatic. CalculatorCafe uses birth-year solar position data, which is genuinely better for cusp birthdays, but it presents that precision without showing the reader where the fixed table ends and the year-specific calculation begins. AgentCalc explains its method, including the way it reads the month and day so a time-zone offset cannot shift the birthday, but its result is a short line with a brief description and little of the element and quality context a beginner needs. HoroCalc bundles sun, moon, rising and Chinese zodiac into one tool, which is useful if you want everything, but it buries the simple sun-sign question under modes and extras. ToolPlaza is the most candid of the group about its limits, stating plainly that it ignores birth time, place and precession, but its output is a bare sign key with no element, quality or trait detail. AstroDifferent states the tropical basis clearly and gives element and date range, but stops there.

Our winning moves are therefore about clarity rather than extra features. This page names the tropical basis in the introduction, on the calculator itself and in every result, so a reader comparing it with a sidereal result knows immediately why the two differ. It returns element, quality, dates and traits together, instead of making the reader visit three pages for them. It flags boundary days in the result instead of silently applying a fixed table. And it says openly that the birth year field does not change the answer, rather than letting a reader assume a precision the tool does not have. A tool that is honest about its one limit is more useful than a tool that hides it behind a longer form.

Mistakes to avoid when finding a sun sign

  • Using a sidereal table for a Western horoscope, or the reverse. Check which system your horoscope source uses before comparing answers.
  • Treating a boundary date as settled by a date-only lookup. On a first or last day of a range, birth time and place can change the answer.
  • Reading traits as predictions. Traditional trait lists describe a sign in general terms; they do not measure any individual.
  • Assuming the Sun sign is the whole chart. Moon and rising signs need more data and often change the picture.
  • Adding a thirteenth sign. The constellation Ophiuchus sits on the ecliptic in astronomy, but the tropical zodiac has twelve equal signs, and Ophiuchus is not one of them.
  • Confusing the sign with the constellation of the same name. In the tropical system the sign Aries no longer lines up with the constellation Aries, because precession has moved the stars behind the seasonal frame.

Used with those limits in mind, a sun sign calculator does a small job well: it turns a birth date into the sign a Western horoscope column will use for that person, in seconds, without pretending to be more than that.

Sun signs and compatibility: a light touch

Sun signs are often used as a first pass at compatibility: fire signs are traditionally paired with air signs, and earth signs with water signs, on the reasoning that those elements complement each other. That is a starting point for conversation, not a verdict on a relationship, and a full compatibility reading looks at both complete charts, not two sun signs alone. A different angle on the same question is the moon phase compatibility calculator, which compares two birth dates by moon phase rather than by sun sign. If the two approaches disagree, that disagreement is itself informative: it shows how much of the answer depends on which single factor you chose to compare.

Frequently Asked Questions

A tropical sun sign is the sign of the Western zodiac the Sun was in on your birth date, counted from the March equinox. The tropical zodiac divides the Sun’s apparent yearly path into twelve equal 30 degree signs, starting with Aries at the equinox.

Often it is not. The sidereal zodiac is anchored to the fixed stars and corrects for the precession of the equinoxes, while the tropical zodiac is anchored to the seasons. The two systems have drifted apart by about 24 degrees, so a sidereal sign is often one sign earlier than the tropical sign for the same birth date.

Usually because they use different systems or different boundary conventions. A tropical calculator and a sidereal calculator can legitimately disagree, and two tropical tables can differ by a day on boundary dates because the exact moment the Sun changes signs shifts slightly by year and time zone.

On the fixed tropical calendar used here, you are the sign whose range contains your birth date, and the calculator flags boundary days so you know to check further. For an exact answer on a boundary birthday, you need a full chart calculation with your birth year, exact birth time and birthplace.

No. The birth year field is optional and does not change this tool’s answer, because the tool applies fixed tropical calendar ranges. Calculators that use the birth year are doing a different, year-specific ingress calculation, which this tool does not claim to do.

The sun sign is traditionally read as core identity and needs only a birth date. The moon sign is traditionally read as emotional life and needs a birth time for accuracy. The rising sign, or ascendant, is traditionally read as first impressions and needs a birth time and birthplace.

No. Astronomy is the scientific study of celestial bodies, while astrology is the belief that their positions influence human affairs, and that claim has not survived scientific testing. Treat sun signs as a cultural and symbolic tradition, not as measured evidence about a person.

No. It gives one part of a chart, the sun sign, from a birth date alone. A full birth chart also includes the moon sign, the rising sign, the planets and their positions, and it needs a birth time and birthplace to compute them.
