 Fence Price Calculator

Published onApril 22, 2026 Updated onOctober 21, 2026 1:23 pm

Price your fence before you call a contractor. Pick a material, enter the length and height, add gates, and this calculator splits materials from labor for a professional install, or prices materials only for a DIY build. It is a per-foot rate model, not an itemised parts list: the rate you enter has to carry posts, rails, panels and hardware inside it, and the box under the calculator states every assumption the total rests on.

Fence Price Calculator
Installed and materials-only fence cost by material, length, height and gates
Include professional installation?

Estimate only. Slope, old-fence removal, permits and local labor rates move the final price, and none of them are in this total. The full assumption list is in the formula section below.

Quick Answer

A 150 ft wood fence at $30 per foot, 6 ft high with 1 gate at $400, prices out at $7,350.00 installed: $4,500.00 of fence run plus $400.00 of gate makes a $4,900.00 materials subtotal, and labor at 50% of materials adds $2,450.00. The same fence priced materials-only for DIY is $4,900.00. Change the rate to a local quote and the whole estimate follows it.

Key takeaways

  • This is a rate model, not a parts list. It never counts posts, rails or pickets, so the per-foot rate has to carry them all.
  • Labor is a flat 50% of the materials subtotal in installed mode, gates included. That is a budgeting rule of thumb, not a contractor quote.
  • Height is priced by factor: 4 ft at 0.85, 6 ft at 1, 8 ft at 1.25. Removal, permits, slope and waste are all outside the total.
  • The preset rates are editable starting points. One local quote typed into the rate field beats any national table, including the one below.

How to use the fence price calculator

Set the material, confirm the rate, enter length, height and gates, then choose installed or DIY and click Calculate. The results stay hidden until you do.

  1. Material and rate: picking a material loads its preset rate. Keep it as a first pass, or overwrite it with a per-foot figure from a local quote, a supplier, or the 2026 ranges table below.
  2. Length: total linear feet, all runs added, minus the house width where the fence ties in. If your tape work is still in feet and inches, run it through the feet to inch calculator first so the length goes in as one clean number.
  3. Height and gates: height adjusts the run price by factor. Gates are priced per gate, and their widths stay inside your length.
  4. Installed or materials only: installed adds labor at 50% of the materials subtotal. Materials only returns the subtotal on its own for a DIY budget.

The formula, and every assumption inside it

Fence run = length × rate × height factor. Materials subtotal = fence run + (gates × cost per gate). Installed total = subtotal × 1.5.

Fence run = Length × Rate per foot × Height factor
Materials subtotal = Fence run + (Gates × Cost per gate)
Installed total = Materials subtotal × 1.5  |  DIY total = Materials subtotal

A short formula is only honest if its assumptions are printed next to it. These are the ones baked into every number this tool returns:

  • The rate bundles everything for the run. Posts, post concrete, rails, pickets, panels or mesh, fasteners and hardware all live inside the per-foot rate. The tool has no post-spacing, rail-count or picket-count input, so it cannot catch a design that needs unusually close post spacing. For comparison, most residential wood and vinyl fences run posts at about 8 ft spacing, and a take-off style quote prices that explicitly.
  • Height is a straight multiplier. 4 ft costs 0.85 of the 6 ft rate and 8 ft costs 1.25 of it. Real material use is close to that, but taller fences also want longer posts set deeper, which the factor does not add.
  • Labor is 50% of materials, applied to gates too. In installed mode the labor allowance is half the whole subtotal, so the fence run and the gates each grow by half. A $400 gate therefore contributes $600 to an installed total, even though the field is easy to read as an installed gate price. Enter the gate at two thirds of its installed price if you want the tool to land on the installed figure.
  • One rate serves both modes. The same per-foot figure feeds installed and DIY runs. If you paste in an installed quote rate and then switch to materials only, the DIY total will read high, because an installed rate already contains someone else's labor. For DIY, enter a materials rate.
  • Nothing else is added. No waste allowance, no old-fence removal, no permit fees, no slope, rock or tree-root allowance, no delivery. The exclusions section below prices the big ones separately.

Worked example: 150 ft of wood fence, one gate

The prefilled values are this example: wood at $30 per foot, 150 ft long, 6 ft high, one gate at $400, professional installation on.

1. Run: 150 ft × $30 × 1 = $4,500.00→ 2. Gates: 1 × $400 = $400.00→ 3. Subtotal $4,900.00, labor $2,450.00→ 4. Installed total: $7,350.00
Check runMaterialsLaborTotal
Chain link $15/ft, 100 ft, 4 ft, no gates, installed$1,275.00$637.50$1,912.50
Vinyl $42/ft, 200 ft, 8 ft, 2 gates at $350, installed$11,200.00$5,600.00$16,800.00
Wood $25.50/ft, 123.4 ft, 6 ft, 3 gates at $275.25, DIY$3,972.45$0.00$3,972.45
Wrought iron $60/ft, 500 ft, 8 ft, 4 gates at $800, installed$40,700.00$20,350.00$61,050.00

Each row is a real run of this calculator, so you can type any of them in and get the same figures back. Note the last row: at 8 ft the height factor lifts the run to $37,500 before gates, which is why height and material together move a budget more than length alone.

2026 fence prices per linear foot: presets vs the guides

The preset loaded for each material sits inside the ranges the big cost guides publish for 2026, but the guides disagree with each other and run wider. Treat the preset as the middle of the conversation, not the end of it.

MaterialTool presetLabel range in toolAngi 2026, installedHomeGuide, installed
Chain link$15/ft~$10 to $20/ft$8 to $40/ft$9 to $30/ft
Wood$30/ft~$15 to $45/ft$10 to $45/ft$17 to $22/ft
Vinyl$42/ft~$25 to $60/ft$15 to $40/ft$15 to $30/ft
Aluminum / steel$50/ft~$30 to $70/ft$17 to $90/ft$24 to $32/ft
Wrought iron$60/ft~$50+/ft$25 to $55/ft$24 to $44/ft

Ranges are the installed figures published by Angi's 2026 fence installation cost guide and by HomeGuide's fence cost guide, both accessed October 21, 2026. Two honest warnings from the numbers themselves. First, the vinyl preset of $42 sits above both guides' typical installed ranges, so vinyl shoppers should expect to type a lower local rate in. Second, the wrought iron preset of $60 sits above Angi's top end of $55: custom ironwork does go there, but a standard ornamental quote often will not. Where your fence meets a lawn edge in cedar specifically, the cedar fence cost calculator prices that one material in its own right instead of through a general preset.

Materials vs labor, and the DIY question

In installed mode, labor is one third of the final bill, not half of it: labor is set at 50% of materials, and materials plus that labor make the total, so the split is 2 to 1.

Materials $4,900.00 (66.7%)
Labor $2,450.00 (33.3%)

The worked example split: $7,350.00 installed total. The $400 gate sits inside the materials bar.

That 2 to 1 shape is the whole DIY case and the whole DIY trap. Building it yourself removes the labor third, which on the worked example is $2,450. But the DIY total here is a materials figure at the rate you entered, and it quietly assumes the concrete, fasteners and hardware are inside that rate, while tool rental, an auger, delivery and disposal of the old fence are not in either total. A realistic DIY budget adds those back before comparing against a contractor's single number. The digging itself is often the bigger project: post holes across a long run are excavation work, and the excavation cost calculator helps sanity-check what machine time would cost if the ground fights back. If you do count your own concrete per post instead of trusting the bundled rate, the concrete volume calculator turns hole dimensions into a volume to order against.

Professional install

  • One number covers crew, setting posts and haul-away negotiation
  • Work usually done in days, with the contractor carrying layout risk
  • Costs the labor third on top of materials, $2,450 on the example

DIY build

  • Saves the labor share, keeps every weekend the project takes
  • Concrete, tool rental and delivery land on top of the materials total
  • Layout, levels and the property line are all your problem now

What this estimate leaves out

The total covers the new fence run and its gates, installed or not. Everything in this section is real money on most projects and none of it is in the number above.

  • Old fence removal: Angi's 2026 guide puts removal at $3 to $5 per linear foot, so budget $450 to $750 on a 150 ft replacement before the new fence is discussed.
  • Permits: the same guide lists fence permits at roughly $20 to $60 where they are required, most often for fences over 6 ft or on a property line. Your city, not this page, has the deciding word.
  • Ground conditions: slope, rock, roots and tight access all push labor up. The tool has no terrain input, so a difficult site means raising the rate or the labor expectation yourself.
  • Calling 811: free, and not optional in practice. As the Hawaii Public Utilities Commission's safe digging guidance puts it, call 811 before digging so underground lines get marked, and allow the required waiting period before the first post hole. Every state runs the same system.
  • Finishing and upkeep: stain or seal for wood, typically priced per foot on top of install, plus the maintenance years the material choice commits you to. A fence that shares a project budget with a deck or patio is worth totalling together, and the deck cost calculator covers the other half of that backyard bill.

What competing calculators miss

Fence pricing tools split into two camps, and each leaves something real on the table:

  • Take-off calculators (RenoFig, CalcSummit): they count posts at a stated spacing, rails, pickets and concrete bags, which is the right shape for ordering materials. Their weak spot is price: the per-foot ranges are baked in from national guides, and the labour side is thin or missing, so the total is a shopping list with a price tag rather than a project budget.
  • Range estimators (HowMuchFence, CostFlowAI): wide material menus, terrain and state adjustments, and low to high ranges instead of one number. Useful for a first sanity check, frustrating for a budget, because a range spanning thousands cannot be compared against the one quote in your hand.
  • Guide pages (Angi, HomeGuide): the best published ranges, and this page cites them openly. They compute nothing with your length, your gates and your rate.
  • The gap this page fills: one editable rate, your length, your height factor and your gates, with the materials and labor split shown and every modelling assumption printed on the same page as the total, including the two places the model is crude (labor on gates, one rate for both modes).

Frequently asked questions

Installed, national guides put chain link at $8 to $40, wood at $10 to $45, vinyl at $15 to $40, aluminum and steel at $17 to $90, and wrought iron at $25 to $55 per linear foot in 2026, per Angi data accessed October 2026. This calculator starts from a single editable preset per material, $15 for chain link up to $60 for wrought iron, so replace it with a local quote rate whenever you have one.

Length times price per foot times the height factor gives the fence run. Add gates times the cost per gate for the materials subtotal. In installed mode the tool adds labor at 50 percent of that subtotal, so the total is the subtotal times 1.5. In materials-only mode the subtotal is the total.

The tool defaults to $400 per gate and lets you edit it. Guides put gates anywhere from about $150 for a basic walk gate to $2,000 for a driveway gate. Note that installed mode adds the 50 percent labor allowance on the gate cost as well, so a $400 gate contributes $600 to an installed total.

On this tool's model, materials only is two thirds of the installed total, because labor is set at 50 percent of materials. Real DIY savings are smaller once you add concrete, tool rental, fasteners and your time, and the rate you enter for a DIY run should be a materials rate, not an installed quote rate.

Yes. The tool scales the 6 ft rate by 0.85 at 4 ft and by 1.25 at 8 ft, so an 8 ft fence costs 25 percent more per foot than the same fence at 6 ft. Taller fences can also need deeper posts and a permit, which the tool does not add.

Chain link. It carries the lowest preset rate in the tool at $15 per foot and the lowest ranges in the published guides. Wood is usually the cheapest privacy option, and it is the preset this calculator opens on, at $30 per foot.

Often, especially for fences over 6 ft or on a property line, and the rules are local, so check before you build. Before any post hole is dug in the United States, call 811 so underground utilities are marked. The locate is free and needs a few business days of lead time in most states.

Measure each run along the ground in feet and add the runs together, subtracting the width of the house where the fence ties into it. Gate widths stay in the length on this tool, because the cost per gate field prices the gate itself. If you want a waste allowance, add 5 to 10 percent to the length before entering it, because the tool does not add one.
