Vinyl Fence Calculator

Updated onOctober 9, 2026 6:48 am

A vinyl fence project comes down to four counts: panels, posts, concrete, and gates. Get those right and the budget follows. In 2026, vinyl fencing typically runs $15 to $45 per linear foot installed, with material-only panels at big-box stores around $80 to $200 per 8-foot section and gates adding $150 to $600 each installed.

Enter your measurements below. The calculator returns panel and post counts (including extra posts for gates), concrete bags, and a cost estimate you can tune with your local per-foot price.

Worked example

A 150-foot fence line with 8-foot panels, 1 gate at 4 feet wide, priced at $30 per foot:

  • Fence line to cover: 146.00 ft (150 minus the 4 ft gate opening)
  • Panels: 19 (146 ÷ 8 = 18.25, rounded up)
  • Posts: 21 (19 panels + 1 end post + 1 extra gate post)
  • Concrete: 21 bags (one 80 lb bag per post)
  • Estimated cost: $4,380.00 (146 ft × $30); range $3,285.00–$5,913.00

The gate math matters: each gate needs its own pair of sturdy posts, and the opening comes out of the panel run. Tools that count posts as panels + 1 short you a post per gate.

How it works

Fence line = perimeter − gates × gate width. Panels = ceiling(fence line ÷ panel width). Posts = panels + 1 + gates (each gate adds a post beyond the line posts). Concrete = one 80 lb bag per post, the standard DIY rule of thumb. Cost = fence line × your per-foot rate, with a range at 75% and 135% to bracket DIY-materials versus pro-installed pricing.

What changed in this version: the previous calculator counted posts as panels + 1, shorting every gate a post, estimated no concrete at all, and gave no cost figure. This version adds gate posts, concrete bags, and a tunable 2026 cost estimate.

What competing fence calculators miss

Most fence calculators stop at panel counts, leaving the two budget questions (posts with concrete, and installed cost) unanswered. Others hardcode a per-foot price with no source or date. A tunable rate prefilled with the documented 2026 range keeps the estimate honest and adjustable to your market.

Vinyl fence costs by style (2026)

Not all vinyl fences cost the same. The style you choose moves the per-foot price more than almost anything else. These are 2026 US national averages for materials and installed cost per linear foot:

StyleMaterials only ($/ft)Installed ($/ft)Best for
Ranch / split-rail$8 – $15$18 – $30Open yards, horse pastures
Picket$12 – $22$22 – $38Front yards, decorative borders
Shadow box$18 – $30$30 – $50Side yards, partial privacy
Privacy (solid)$20 – $40$35 – $65Backyards, pools, maximum privacy

Pick your style in the calculator above and it prefills the per-foot box with the installed midpoint, so your estimate starts from a realistic number instead of a guess. Prices vary by region: high-cost metro quotes can reach $40 to $50 per foot, while rural markets may come in under $15.

What the component breakdown adds

The quick estimate gives you one number. The component breakdown shows where it comes from: panels, posts, caps, concrete, and gates, each with its own editable unit price. Defaults are typical 2026 values (panel $85, post $30, cap $4, 50 lb concrete bag $9, gate $150 with hardware).

One thing to know: there are two common concrete rules. DIY guides use one 80 lb bag per post, which is what the quick estimate above counts. Pros usually figure two 50 lb bags of fast-setting mix per post in average soil, which is the default in the breakdown. Both land in the same ballpark; pick the one that matches how you will build.

Labor: DIY or hire a pro

Professional installation typically runs $10 to $30 per linear foot, and it often equals or exceeds the material cost. Toggle “Include professional labor” in the calculator to add it at $20 per foot, the national midpoint, or type in a quote you received. Rocky soil, sloped ground, extra gates, and removing an old fence all push labor toward the high end.

Worked example: full component breakdown

A 150-foot privacy fence with 8-foot panels and 1 gate (4 ft wide), using the default unit prices and $20/ft labor:

  • Panels: 19 x $85 = $1,615
  • Caps: 21 x $4 = $84
  • Concrete: 42 bags x $9 = $378 (2 per post)
  • Gate: 1 x $150 = $150
  • Materials subtotal: $2,857 (panels 57%, posts 22%, caps and concrete 16%, gates 5%)
  • Labor: 146 ft x $20 = $2,920
  • Project total: $5,777, or $39.57 per foot

That per-foot total sits comfortably inside the 2026 privacy installed range of $35 to $65 per foot, which is a good sanity check on any estimate.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a vinyl fence cost in 2026?

Typically $15 to $45 per linear foot installed, or roughly $3,000 to $8,000 for a 150–200 ft yard. Panels alone run about $80 to $200 per 8-foot section at big-box stores; gates add $150 to $600 each installed.

Why do gates need extra posts?

Gate posts carry the gate’s weight and the stress of opening and closing, so each gate gets its own reinforced posts rather than sharing line posts.

How much concrete per post?

One 80 lb bag per post is the common DIY rule for a 4×4 post in a standard hole. Rocky soil or tall privacy fences may need more.

Should I DIY or hire out?

DIY saves the labor portion (often $10 to $30 per foot), but vinyl panels are heavy and posts must be perfectly plumb and spaced. Get at least two installed quotes before deciding.

Do I need a permit?

Many towns require permits, setbacks, or height limits for fences. Check local rules before digging, and call 811 for utility marking.
