The NCP days formula
For the non-contributory tab the formula is NCP Days = (End Date − Start Date + 1) − Excluded Days. The custody tab uses Time Share = (Days with the NCP / Days in the Year) x 100.
End Date − Start Date + 1 counts every calendar day in the range, including both the start and the end date, which matches how leave records, pension service records and EPF monthly returns count days: whole calendar days, never fractions. Excluded Days are days you choose not to count, such as public holidays, weekends or paid days that fall inside the range. If excluded days ever exceed the period length, the result is reported as 0 rather than a negative number, and the share is reported as 0.00%. On the custody side, the complement is automatic: the custodial parent’s days are the year length minus the NCP days, so the two shares always add to 100%.
How to use the NCP days calculator
Pick the tab that matches your meaning of NCP first. The two tabs share nothing but the name, and entering leave dates into the custody tab (or custody days into the period tab) produces numbers that look plausible and mean nothing.
- Non-Contributory Period tab: enter the start and end dates of the unpaid or non-contributing stretch, then the excluded days your plan does not count. Click Calculate NCP Days for the count, the period length and the percentage share.

Where NCP days matter
The day count itself is simple. What it feeds is not, because the same number lands in pension records, payroll runs and court filings where a day or two moves money.
Provident fund and pension records
In India’s Employees’ Provident Fund, NCP days are a formal reporting field: the employer enters them in the monthly Electronic Challan-cum-Return (ECR) for each member, and those days reduce the wages on which the 12% contributions are computed. EPFO rules only accept whole numbers, and a zero-wage month is reported with NCP days equal to every day in that month. Pension systems use the same idea in reverse: Canada’s CPP, for example, defines a contributory period with statutory exclusions and dropout provisions, so the non-contributory stretches in a work history change the benefit the record produces. HR teams track non-contributory stretches because they break or preserve service continuity for gratuity, pension vesting and benefit eligibility, and because insurers may limit cover during periods with no premium contribution. Worked examples from both tabs
Each example below reproduces exactly in the calculator with the inputs shown.
- Unpaid leave with exclusions. January 5 to January 31, 2026 is 27 inclusive days. Excluding 4 days (a public holiday and paid sick days) gives 27 − 4 = 23 NCP days, and 23 / 27 x 100 = 85.19% of the period. This is the pre-filled example on the first tab.
- Leap February. February 1 to February 29, 2024 is 29 days. With 2 excluded days the result is 27 NCP days at 93.10% of the period. The same calendar span in a non-leap February is a day shorter, which is why the dates, not a fixed month length, drive the count.
- Custody share. 104 days with the non-custodial parent in a 365 day year gives 104 / 365 x 100 = 28.49%, with 261 days left with the custodial parent. Switch the year to 366 and the same schedule reads 28.42%.
- Combined periods. Add the January example (23 days) and a second period, March 10 to March 12, 2026 with no exclusions (3 days), and the list shows a combined total of 26 NCP days.
