Price tab: $45 per cubic yard, 4 yards needed, $60 delivery. Material = $180, total = $240.00, effective $60.00/yard with delivery. Equivalent: 54 bags.

Quantity tab: 400 sq ft at 3 inches deep, $4.50 per 2 cu ft bag, $45 per bulk yard. Cubic feet = 400 × 0.25 = 100; cubic yards = 100 ÷ 27 = 3.70 yd³ (order 3.8, rounded up). The 324 shortcut

One cubic yard spread 1 inch deep covers 324 square feet (27 ÷ 1/12), so cubic yards = area ÷ 324 × depth in inches. For the worked example: 400 ÷ 324 × 3 = 3.70 yards, matching the tool exactly. At the standard 3-inch depth this simplifies to 108 sq ft per yard: 400 ÷ 108 = 3.70. Memorize 108-at-3-inches and scale by depth for garden-center math.

Bulk versus bag: the real math

Bags cost more per yard but waste nothing and spare you the driveway pile; bulk is cheaper per yard but usually has minimums and a delivery fee. The crossover in the worked example is decisive: bulk saves $58.50 on 3.7 yards even before counting the delivery fee. For small beds under about 1.5 yards, bags often win once delivery is included; above that, bulk nearly always wins. The tool prices both routes so you see the crossover for your numbers.

How deep to lay it

Two to three inches is the standard for weed suppression and moisture retention; four inches for new beds or aggressive weeds. More than four inches can suffocate roots and invite voles. Mulch settles 10-20% in the first months, which is why the tool rounds the order up and why the disclaimer says to buy extra: a bed calculated at exactly 3 inches will read closer to 2.5 by midsummer.
