Miles To Km Calculator
One mile is exactly 1.609344 kilometers, and this converter uses that exact factor in both directions: miles to kilometers and kilometers to miles. Every conversion also returns meters, feet, yards, centimeters and nautical miles on the same screen, so a race distance, a road trip or a flight leg only ever needs one entry.
Every line is formatted to two decimals except centimeters, which the tool rounds to the nearest whole centimeter. The conversion underneath is computed at full precision either way.
Quick Answer
5 miles = 8.05 km as the calculator displays it, or 8.04672 km at full precision. The same conversion gives 8,046.72 meters, 26,400.00 feet, 8,800.00 yards, 804,672 centimeters and 4.34 nautical miles. The 5-mile example is pre-filled, so one click on Convert reproduces all six lines.
Key takeaways
- The factor is a definition, not a measurement: 1 mile = 1.609344 km exactly, fixed by international agreement in 1959, so conversions never drift.
- The kilometer figure is always the larger one for the same distance, roughly 1.6 times the miles. If your result breaks that pattern, the direction is flipped.
- Speeds convert with the same factor: 65 mph = 104.61 km/h, because a mile per hour is just a mile converted per hour.
- The 1.6 mental shortcut runs about 0.6% low. Over a marathon that is roughly 250 meters, which is why race work deserves the exact factor.

How to use the miles to km calculator
Enter a distance, confirm the direction, and click Convert. Results stay hidden until you convert, and the six output lines always describe the same single distance.
- Pick a direction: miles to kilometers, or kilometers to miles. The input label renames itself to match, which is the quickest check that you are converting the way you intended.
- Or hit Swap: the swap button flips the direction and the label in one click. Note its one side effect: if results are already on screen, swap converts the same typed number again in the new direction, so a displayed 5-mile result becomes a conversion of 5 kilometers. That is handy for a return leg and confusing if you expected the answer itself to be carried across.
- Enter the distance: decimals are fine (try 26.2 for a marathon in miles, or 42.195 in kilometers). Zero converts cleanly to zero everywhere; a blank field, text or a negative number returns a plain message instead of a result.
- Read the line you need: the converted distance leads at large size, followed by meters, feet, yards, centimeters and nautical miles. Five of the six lines show two decimals; centimeters show none, a formatting choice explained in the FAQs.
For distances between two places rather than a number you already hold, the miles flown calculator measures a flight route first and converts it afterwards, with round trips and repeat flights totalled for you.
Where 1.609344 comes from
The mile is defined through the yard: the 1959 international yard and pound agreement set 1 yard = 0.9144 meters exactly, and a mile is 1,760 yards, so a mile is 1,760 × 0.9144 = 1,609.344 meters, or 1.609344 km, exactly. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) publishes the factor on that basis, and the SI brochure of the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM) anchors the meter it is built from.
Because the factor is exact, the quality risk in this conversion is never the math; it is tools that quietly compute with a rounded version. A converter running on 1.60934 is off by 4 meters per 1,000 miles, and one running on 1.609 is off by 344 meters per 1,000 miles. Neither matters for a single run across town. Both matter when conversions chain together, as they do in navigation logs, survey work and race-course measurement. The same exactness habit is why the inch is defined as exactly 2.54 cm, a parallel covered by the cm to inches calculator.
Worked examples in both directions
Six real runs of the calculator cover the distances people convert most, in both directions. The figures below are the tool’s displayed values, rounded to two decimals exactly as the results box shows them.
| Input | Converted | Meters | Feet | Nautical miles |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5 miles | 8.05 km | 8,046.72 | 26,400.00 | 4.34 |
| 26.2 miles (marathon shorthand) | 42.16 km | 42,164.81 | 138,336.00 | 22.77 |
| 100 miles | 160.93 km | 160,934.40 | 528,000.00 | 86.90 |
| 2,445 miles (New York to Los Angeles by road) | 3,934.85 km | 3,934,846.08 | 12,909,600.00 | 2,124.65 |
| 42.195 km (marathon, official) | 26.22 miles | 42,195.00 | 138,435.04 | 22.78 |
| 5 km (a 5K race) | 3.11 miles | 5,000.00 | 16,404.20 | 2.70 |
Two cautions hide in this table. First, the marathon: 26.2 miles is a rounded nickname, and converting it gives 42.16 km, while the official marathon distance is the other way round, fixed at 42.195 km, which is 26.2188 miles at full precision and 26.22 miles as displayed. Converting a nickname back and forth makes it look as if the numbers disagree; they do not, the nickname is simply rounded. Second, the road-trip row: 2,445 miles is a road distance, while the companion flight tool on this site quotes 2,446 great-circle air miles between the same two cities. The near-identical figures are a coincidence of this city pair. Road distances normally exceed air distances by a wide margin, and the two answer different questions, so they should not be mixed in the same plan.
Miles to kilometers conversion table

| 5 | 8.04672 | Common training run |
| 10 | 16.09344 | Short drive |
| 26.2 | 42.1648128 | Marathon shorthand (official: 42.195 km) |
| 50 | 80.4672 | Regional trip |
| 100 | 160.9344 | Road-trip leg, century ride |

Races, road signs and speed limits
Race distances are set in kilometers and nicknamed in miles, which is why runners meet this conversion more than anyone. A 5K is 3.10686 miles, a 10K is 6.21371 miles, a half marathon (21.0975 km) is 13.1094 miles, and the marathon (42.195 km) is 26.2188 miles, all at full precision. If a training plan mixes the systems, convert the race distance exactly and round only your pace targets; rounding the distance itself is how a plan quietly loses or gains a few hundred meters.
On the road, the same factor converts speeds one for one: multiply mph by 1.609344 to get km/h. A 30 mph residential limit is 48.28 km/h, the US interstate staple of 65 mph is 104.61 km/h, and a European 100 km/h motorway limit is 62.14 mph. Odometer and service-interval work uses plain distance: a car imported from the US showing 60,000 miles has covered 96,560.64 km. For the shorter end of the same imperial-metric seam, feet and meters, the meter to feet calculator handles the unit pair that shows up in heights, rooms and runway lengths.
The mental shortcut, and what it costs
For a spoken estimate, multiply miles by 1.6: 50 miles becomes 80 km against an exact 80.4672 km. That shortcut always runs low, by 0.58%, because it drops the 0.009344 tail of the factor. A one-step refinement recovers almost all of it: multiply by 1.6, then add 0.6% of the result. For 50 miles that is 80 + 0.48 = 80.48 km, within 15 meters of exact. Going the other way, multiply kilometers by 0.62 for a rough mile figure (100 km becomes 62 against an exact 62.14). Use the shortcuts in conversation and the calculator anywhere a number gets written down, logged or raced against.
What competing converters miss
Miles to km is the most commoditized conversion on the web, and the differences are in the details:
- Per-value pages (RapidTables and similar): strong tables and the exact factor, but organized as a separate page per number, with no reverse direction on the same screen and no supporting units.
- Rounded-factor tools (Metric-Conversions, CalculatorEmpire and similar): the headline formula is printed as 1.60934 while the text concedes 1.609344 is the definition. One widely used converter states the exact definition in its introduction and then computes with the rounded factor anyway, an inconsistency its own page admits to.
- General length converters (FreeUtilityTools and similar): dozens of unit pairs in one grid, with miles to kilometers computed at 1.6093 in at least one case, and the pair you actually need buried among angle and area units.
- Display-precision traps (GigaCalculator and similar): long unrounded answers that look precise but rest on a worked example computed with 1.6093 while the stated formula says 1.609344, so the example and the formula disagree in the fourth significant figure.
- The gap this page fills: the exact factor in the code, not just in the prose, both directions with a labelled swap whose behaviour is disclosed, and six unit lines from one entry, including the nautical mile that flight and marine readers need, with display rounding stated openly instead of dressed up as precision.
Frequently asked questions
Exactly 1.609344 kilometers. This is the international definition of the mile, fixed by agreement in 1959.
Multiply the miles by 1.609344. For example, 5 miles x 1.609344 = 8.04672 km.
Divide the kilometers by 1.609344, or multiply by 0.621371. For example, 42.195 km / 1.609344 = 26.2188 miles.
A 5K race is 5 kilometers, which equals 3.10686 miles. A 10K is 6.21371 miles.
A statute (land) mile is 1.609344 km, while a nautical mile is exactly 1.852 km (about 1.1508 land miles). Nautical miles are used in aviation and shipping.
Approximately, but not exactly. The precise figure is 1.609344 km per mile. The 1.6 shortcut is fine for rough estimates but the exact factor matters for race times, navigation, and engineering.
Because the tool formats centimeters to the nearest whole centimeter, while every other line shows two decimals. The conversion itself is computed at full precision first; only the display is rounded, and at any real distance the fraction of a centimeter is smaller than the accuracy of the distance you started with.
