Formula
The formula to estimate the lightning strike distance is:
Distance = Time × Speed of Sound
Where:
- Time = delay in seconds between lightning and thunder
- Speed of Sound ≈ 343 meters/second (at sea level, 20°C)
Since we want the result in kilometers:
Distance (km) = (Time × 343) / 1000
Example:
If you count 5 seconds between lightning and thunder:
Distance = (5 × 343) / 1000 = 1.715 km
