Tips Per Hour Calculator

Published onSeptember 18, 2025 Updated onOctober 24, 2026 7:56 am

A good shift is not the one with the biggest tip total. It is the one that pays best for each hour you worked. This calculator answers that worker-side question: enter any two of total tips, hours worked, and tips per hour, and it solves the third, so you can compare shifts, nights, and job offers on the same dollars-per-hour basis.

$
Tips Per Hour Calculator
Fill in any two fields. Leave the third blank and the calculator solves it.
Your result

Estimates only, not tax advice. Tips are taxable income; see the IRS notes below and talk to a tax professional about your situation.

Quick Answer

$186 in tips over 6 hours is $31.00 per hour. The math is 186 divided by 6. The same tool runs backwards: 5 hours at $28.50 per hour is $142.50 in tips, and $220 in tips at $22 per hour means 10 hours worked. Enter any two values, leave the third blank, and the calculator fills it in.

How to use this calculator

Fill in exactly two fields and press Calculate. That rule is the whole interface. One value leaves nothing to solve, and three filled values leave nothing left to find, so the tool shows the message "Please enter exactly two values to calculate the third."

Two quirks are worth knowing before you trust a second calculation. First, a solved value is written into the blank field, so after one calculation all three fields hold numbers. To run a different question, clear the field you want solved before pressing Calculate again. Second, anything that is not a number counts as blank: typing letters into a field is treated the same as leaving it empty, and commas in a number such as 1,200 are stripped before the math runs.

The tool rejects zero and negative numbers for the two inputs it divides or multiplies by, with a message naming the pair involved. That guard matters because a zero-hour shift would mean dividing by zero, and a negative tip total has no meaning here.

Formula

All three directions come from one relationship: total tips equals hours worked times tips per hour. Solve that equation for whichever value is missing.

You wantFormulaExample
Tips per hourTotal tips / hours worked186 / 6 = $31.00/hr
Total tipsHours worked x tips per hour5 x 28.50 = $142.50
Hours workedTotal tips / tips per hour220 / 22 = 10 hours

Every result is shown to two decimal places, and the solved field is filled with that same rounded value. Rounding only touches the display and the filled field; the result text and the filled field always agree.

Worked example: comparing three shifts

Run the same tool on three different nights and the ranking can flip. The biggest tip total below is not the best night once hours are counted.

ShiftTipsHoursTips per hour
Friday dinner$1866$31.00
Short lunch$142.505$28.50
Long Saturday$22010$22.00

Saturday collected the most money and paid the worst rate. That is exactly why tips per hour, not the nightly total, is the number to track when you choose shifts or compare venues. One strong night proves little; an average across several weeks in the same role is the figure worth acting on.

Your real hourly rate, not just your tip rate

Tips per hour is only part of your pay. Add your base wage to get the rate you actually earn. A server on a $12 base wage with $31 per hour in tips earns $43 per hour in total, and $43 is the number to set against another offer, not the $12 printed on the posting.

Run the same check backwards when a venue promises a combined figure. A posting that promises $25 per hour average with tips looks like a raise until you compare it with $31 per hour in tips alone at your current job: unless the base wage at the new venue closes the gap, it is a pay cut dressed as a raise. For the full pay picture, the commission to hourly calculator and the annual income to hourly calculator convert other pay shapes into the same hourly terms.

Tip-outs: the number that actually hits your pocket

The calculator works on whatever you enter, and it has no tip-out field. If you tip out part of what you collected, subtract that amount before you calculate, or the rate flatters you.

Take a shift where you collected $200 and tipped out $40 to the bar and bussers. Enter $160, not $200. Over 6 hours that is $26.67 per hour in your pocket, not the $33.33 per hour the unadjusted $200 would suggest, and $26.67 is the figure that belongs in your budget. In that example the $40 tip-out is 20% of the $200 collected; your own house percentage will differ, so use your actual tip-out, not a guessed rate.

Tip pooling math, splitting one pool across a team by hours or points, is a separate question. This tool answers the personal question of what your time earned after your own tip-out, not how a pool should be divided.

What the IRS expects from tipped workers

Tips are income, and the reporting rules are specific. According to the IRS guidance on tips, withholding and reporting, employees who receive $20 or more in cash tips in a calendar month must report the total to their employer in writing by the 10th day of the following month. Tips below $20 in a month do not need that employer report, but they are still taxable income on the return. Keep a daily record of tips received; that record is what makes the monthly report and the annual return defensible.

Service charges are not tips. An automatic gratuity added to a large-party bill, where the customer did not choose the amount, is wages paid by the employer, not a tip, and it follows the wage reporting path instead. That distinction matters for both the employer report and for the deduction below.

For tax years 2025 through 2028, eligible workers may deduct qualified tips up to $25,000 per return, phasing out above $150,000 of income ($300,000 joint). Read that carefully: it is a federal income tax deduction claimed at filing, not an exemption from tax at the time tips are paid, and it does not remove Social Security and Medicare taxes. Only voluntary, qualified tips count, and the occupation must be one that customarily and regularly received tips. Tax rules change, so verify current law each year. This section is information, not tax advice.

What competing calculators miss

Most tip tools answer the customer's question, not the worker's. Customer tip calculators start from a bill and a percentage and output what to leave. Tip pool calculators split one pool across a team. Tax calculators estimate a deduction. None of those tells one server whether Tuesday beat Saturday, and none of them runs the three-way solve this page offers.

Tool typeWhat it doesWhat it misses for a worker
Customer tip calculatorTip amount from a bill and a percentageNo hours, no rate, no shift comparison
Tip pool calculatorSplits a pool across a teamAnswers a team question, not one person's rate
No-tax-on-tips calculatorEstimates the tax deductionNeeds a tip rate first; it does not compute one
Tip tracker appLogs shifts over timeUseful history, but no instant three-way solve
This calculatorAny two of tips, hours, rate solve the thirdNo tip-out field, no tax computation; adjust inputs yourself

The honest limit runs both ways: this page does not replace a tracker if you want trends across months, and it does not compute tax. Its job is narrower and it does that job in one calculation: turn any two shift numbers into the third, right when you are deciding whether a shift was worth it.

Delivery driving and gig work

The same solver works for delivery driving, with one adjustment in how you read it. Enter total tips and hours worked for a delivery rate, or enter total earnings instead of tips if you want an earnings-per-hour figure for the whole gig. Do not mix the two in one comparison: a tips-only rate and an earnings rate are different numbers, and only the earnings rate can be set against an hourly job offer.

Gig workers should still track mileage and expenses separately, since those come out of the gross before anything is truly earned. A $28.50 per hour earnings figure that cost $6 per hour in fuel and wear is a $22.50 figure in substance, and no tip tool will make that subtraction for you.

For the other side of the counter, the customer's math lives on the 15 percent tip calculator, the catering tip calculator, and the DoorDash tip calculator. Those pages answer what a customer leaves; this page answers what staff earn per hour.

Frequently asked questions

Divide total tips by hours worked. $186 in tips over 6 hours is $31.00 per hour. This calculator also runs the formula backwards: enter any two values to find the third.

Not in the tips field. Tips per hour measures gratuities only; add your base wage afterwards for your true hourly rate. A $12 wage plus $31 per hour in tips is $43 per hour in total.

After. The tool computes on whatever you enter, so subtract what you tipped out to the bar or bussers first. The net figure is what your hour actually earned you.

Yes. The IRS treats all cash and non-cash tips as income subject to federal income tax, and employees must keep a daily tip record and report monthly totals of $20 or more to their employer by the 10th of the following month.

It varies by venue, shift, and city, so no single number is a fair benchmark. Track your own average over several weeks with this tool rather than chasing someone else's number; your trend line matters more than any single shift.

With one value there is nothing to solve, and with all three filled there is nothing left to find. Two inputs define the third uniquely, which is why the tool asks for exactly two. Note that a solved value is written into the blank field, so clear the field you want to solve before running a second calculation.

Yes. Enter total tips and hours worked for a tips-per-hour figure, or enter total earnings instead of tips for an earnings-per-hour figure. Gig workers should still track mileage and expenses separately, since those come out of the gross.

No. For tax years 2025 through 2028, eligible workers may deduct qualified tips up to $25,000 per return for federal income tax, but tips are still reported as income, Social Security and Medicare taxes still apply, and only voluntary qualified tips count. Check current IRS guidance before filing.
