Carpet Area Calculator

Published onSeptember 12, 2025 Updated onOctober 20, 2026 3:30 pm

You are standing in an empty room with a tape measure, a carpet sample, and a price per square foot from the store. Two multiplications stand between you and a real budget: how many square feet the room actually is, and what that area costs at your rate.

This carpet area calculator does both in one step. Enter the length and width in feet and the rate per square foot, and it returns the carpet area and the total cost, formatted to two decimal places. If you are pricing the job that comes before new carpet goes down, the companion carpet removal cost calculator estimates what tearing the old carpet out will cost.

The total is area times the rate you enter. It covers exactly what that rate covers: enter a material-only rate for a material budget, or an installed rate for an installed budget.

Quick Answer

Quick answer: A room 15 ft long by 12 ft wide has a carpet area of 180.00 sq.ft. At a rate of $3.50 per sq.ft the carpet costs $630.00. That is the exact floor area with no waste allowance added, so order roughly 10 percent more material than the area figure, about 198 sq.ft worth, to cover cuts and seams.

Key takeaways

  • Carpet area for a rectangular room is length times width, in feet. Nothing else hides inside the formula.
  • The rate decides what the total means: a material rate gives a material budget, an installed rate gives an installed budget. Keep the two separate when you compare quotes.
  • The calculator returns the true floor area. Waste, seams and pattern matching are ordering decisions you add on top, usually 5 to 10 percent.
  • For L-shaped rooms, split the floor into rectangles, run each one separately, and add the areas.

How to use the carpet area calculator

Measure the room at floor level, wall to wall, and enter the longer side as the length and the shorter side as the width, both in feet. Inches become decimals: 6 inches is 0.5, 3 inches is 0.25. Enter the rate per square foot from your carpet quote, press Calculate, and read the two outputs: the area in square feet and the total cost at that rate. The pre-filled numbers are the worked example below, so you can check every figure in this article against the tool.

One measurement habit matters more than any other: measure both dimensions in two places. Rooms are rarely perfectly rectangular, and an older home can be several inches wider at one end than the other. Use the larger of each pair of measurements, because carpet that arrives short cannot be stretched into the gap, while a small overage is trimmed away. If the room has a closet or alcove you also want carpeted, measure it as its own small rectangle and add it, the same way you would handle a second room. For a bathroom, where fixtures break the floor into pieces, the bathroom area calculator handles that layout specifically.

The formula, and what the rate really covers

There are two lines of arithmetic here and no hidden model. Area is length multiplied by width. Cost is area multiplied by the rate per square foot. Everything useful sits in how honestly you choose the rate.

The formulas: Carpet area (sq.ft) = length (ft) x width (ft). Total cost = carpet area x rate per sq.ft. Square yards = square feet / 9. Square metres = square feet x 0.0929.

Carpet pricing is quoted two ways and confusing them is the most common budgeting error on a flooring project. A material rate, often $2 to $7 per square foot depending on fibre, covers the carpet itself. An installed rate bundles the carpet, padding and fitting labour into one figure, and the Carpet and Rug Institute guidance on buying carpet is a good check on what a complete quote should itemise. If a store quotes you $3.50 for the carpet and $1.50 for installation, enter $5.00 here to see the installed total, or enter $3.50 to see the material line on its own. Just do not compare one store’s material rate against another store’s installed rate and call the first one cheaper.

Worked example: a 15 by 12 living room at $3.50 a foot

The calculator is pre-filled with this room. Length 15 ft, width 12 ft, rate $3.50 per sq.ft.

StepMathResult
Carpet area15 x 12180.00 sq.ft
Total cost180.00 x $3.50$630.00
Same area in square yards180 / 920.00 sq.yd
Same area in square metres180 x 0.092916.72 sq.m
Order quantity with 10% waste180 x 1.10198 sq.ft (about $693.00 at the same rate)

The last row is an ordering figure, not a calculator output, and the distinction is deliberate. The tool reports the room as it is. How much extra you buy depends on the carpet: plain carpet in a simple rectangle needs about 5 to 10 percent for cuts and seams, patterned carpet needs more because the pattern has to line up across strips, and stairs need more again. Carpet also comes on rolls, commonly 12 ft wide, so a 15 ft wide room is covered across its width by a roll cut to length, while a room wider than the roll needs a seam, and the offcut from one strip is paid for whether it lands on your floor or not. When your project is part of a larger renovation budget, the build cost per square foot calculator and the basement finish cost per square foot calculator put flooring in the context of the whole job.

Measuring rooms that are not simple rectangles

Most real rooms have a bay, a fireplace hearth, a hallway mouth or an L shape. The calculator takes one rectangle at a time, and that is all you need if you break the floor down properly.

1

Sketch the floor and split it into rectangles. Draw the outline, then divide it at every change of width so each piece is a clean rectangle.

2

Measure and run each rectangle separately. Enter each length and width into the calculator and note the area it returns.

3

Add the areas, then add waste. The sum is the true carpet area. Add 5 to 10 percent for ordering, more for patterns.

4

Price it once. Run the total area at your rate, or run the main room and multiply, to get a single budget figure.

Subtract only what will genuinely stay uncovered. A fitted wardrobe footprint or a tiled hearth can come off the total, but doorways and the strip under radiators still get carpeted in most installations. When in doubt, leave the area in: the cost of a square foot too much is trivial next to a fitter discovering a shortfall with the old carpet already ripped out.

Carpet area for flooring versus carpet area in a property listing

One honest clarification, because the same phrase means something different in real estate. In property listings, particularly in India, carpet area means the usable indoor floor area of a home, excluding wall thickness, balconies and common areas, and it is compared against built-up and super built-up area when pricing a flat. That is a property measurement, not a flooring one. This calculator answers the flooring question: how much floor a given room presents, and what covering it costs at a stated rate. If you are comparing apartments by their listed carpet area, the arithmetic is the same rectangle math, but no rate per square foot for carpet belongs in it.

What competing calculators miss

The strongest competing carpet tools are genuinely good at conversions: they return square yards and square metres alongside square feet, offer padding estimators, and warn about roll widths. Where most of them stumble for a quick budget is that the cost step is an afterthought buried under shape pickers and unit toggles, or the tool stops at area and leaves you to find a second calculator for price. Generic square footage tools go further in the wrong direction, mixing paint gallons and ceiling heights into what should be a two-input question.

This page keeps the job in one place: area and total cost from three inputs, with the conversions and the waste guidance in the article where they can be explained rather than silently baked into your number. One limit to state plainly: the calculator does not add waste, padding or labour for you, because each of those is a separate line on a real quote. The worked example shows the waste adjustment openly so you can apply your own percentage.

Frequently Asked Questions

Multiply the room length by its width, both in feet. A room 15 ft by 12 ft is 15 x 12 = 180 square feet. That figure is the carpet area. Multiply it by your rate per square foot to get the cost: 180 x $3.50 = $630.00.

Divide square feet by 9. The worked example room is 180 sq.ft, which is 20 square yards exactly. With a 10 percent waste allowance you would order about 22 square yards. Many stores quote in square yards, so this conversion is worth doing before you compare prices.

No, and that is deliberate. It reports the true area of the room. Waste depends on your carpet and layout: about 5 to 10 percent for plain carpet in a rectangle, 10 to 15 percent for patterns, stairs or diagonal layouts. Multiply the area by 1.10 to get a typical order quantity, as the worked example shows.

Only if the rate you enter includes them. The total is simply area times your rate. Enter a material-only rate for the carpet budget on its own, or add your padding and installation rates together and enter the combined figure for an installed total.

Split the floor into two rectangles at the point where the width changes, run each rectangle through the calculator, and add the two areas. Then add your waste percentage to the combined total before ordering.

Yes. The area math is identical for any floor covering sold by the square foot, and the cost line works the same way with that material’s rate per square foot. Only the waste percentage changes: tiles and planks are usually ordered with about 10 percent extra for cuts and breakages.

Convert before entering. One metre is 3.28084 feet, so multiply each metre measurement by that figure. For inches, divide by 12: 6 inches is 0.5 ft and 3 inches is 0.25 ft. The calculator accepts decimals, so 12 ft 6 in goes in as 12.5.
