Yen Conversion Calculator

Published onSeptember 1, 2025 Updated onOctober 24, 2026 5:26 am

Convert US dollars, euros, pounds, Australian dollars, Canadian dollars and Singapore dollars into Japanese yen, or yen back the other way, at a rate you can edit. What sets this converter apart is the provider fee field: most converters show the mid-market headline number and stop, while this one deducts your bank or card spread and shows the gross, the fee taken, and the net amount that actually lands. The built-in rates are a snapshot, not a live feed, and the rate box stays editable so your provider’s real quote is always the one that counts.

Reference rate loaded. Replace with your provider’s live quote for exact results.
As a rule of thumb, banks are commonly quoted at 1% to 3% over the mid-market rate. Remittance services show their fee separately.
Snapshot rates built into this page (1 unit in JPY): USD 158.20, EUR 177.25, GBP 208.95, AUD 110.60, CAD 111.30, SGD 123.15. These are mid-market references recorded when the page was prepared, not live quotes. Your bank or exchange service will quote a slightly worse rate; paste it in for an exact answer, or use the Refresh live rates button and still expect your provider to differ.

Net amount you receive–
Rate used (1 unit → JPY)–
Inverse (1 JPY equals)–

The fee is charged on the converted (target) side: the tool converts the full amount first, then deducts the fee percentage from the gross. One display quirk to know about: in From Japanese yen mode the inverse line still shows 1 divided by the rate, but it labels that figure with the source currency, JPY, rather than the foreign currency, so read the inverse line in To Japanese yen mode.

Quick Answer

At the snapshot rate built into the calculator, $1,000 converts to ¥158,200 before costs. With a typical 1% provider fee, ¥1,582 is deducted and the net you receive is ¥156,618, and 1 yen equals 0.006321 USD. Type your own amount, overwrite the rate with your provider’s quote, and the gross, fee and net lines update on the same basis.

Key takeaways

  • The built-in rates are a snapshot, not a live feed: USD 158.20, EUR 177.25, GBP 208.95, AUD 110.60, CAD 111.30, SGD 123.15. The Refresh button or your provider’s quote replaces them.
  • The fee field is the point of this page. A 2% spread on $5,000 at the snapshot rate quietly removes ¥15,820 from the gross, and only the net line shows it.
  • Both directions run off one rate: to yen multiplies, from yen divides, and the fee always comes off the converted gross.
  • Any currency works through the OTHER option, because the tool only needs a 1-unit-to-JPY rate from you.

How to use the yen conversion calculator

Pick a direction and a currency, check the rate, add your provider’s fee, and read the net line. The results stay hidden until you click Calculate.

  1. Set the direction: “To Japanese yen” turns foreign currency into JPY; “From Japanese yen” prices a yen amount back into the foreign currency. The amount label renames itself so you always know which currency you are typing.
  2. Choose the foreign currency: the matching snapshot rate loads into the rate field. For a currency that is not listed, pick OTHER and type the rate yourself.
  3. Fix the rate before you trust the answer: the snapshot is a starting point. Either press Refresh live rates for current mid-market figures or paste the exact quote your bank, card or exchange shop gives you.
  4. Enter the provider fee or spread: a percentage, commonly 1% to 3% at banks and card networks by the usual rule of thumb. Leave it at 0 for a pure mid-market figure.
  5. Read the net, not the gross: the hero figure is the net amount you receive after the fee. The lines under it show the gross, the fee taken, the rate used and the inverse rate.

Two honest limits. The fee is a single percentage of the converted gross; a provider that charges a flat fee plus a spread needs the flat part converted and added by hand. And the fee field has no upper cap in the code, so a fee above 100% returns a negative net, which is the tool’s way of showing that the quote itself makes no sense.

The conversion formulas, and which side the fee lands on

To yen, the amount is multiplied by the rate; from yen, it is divided by the same rate. The fee is then deducted from the converted gross, in the target currency.

To yen: gross = amount × rate  |  From yen: gross = amount ÷ rate
Fee = gross × fee% ÷ 100  |  Net received = gross − fee  |  Inverse = 1 ÷ rate

The rate convention matters more than the arithmetic. Every rate here is quoted as yen per one foreign unit, the convention the Federal Reserve’s H.10 release uses for the yen (noon buying rates in New York) and the one Japanese providers quote on the street. If a source gives you the rate the other way round, dollars per yen, that figure is the inverse: type 1 divided by it, or read the inverse line off a first conversion and reuse it.

Charging the fee on the converted side is a deliberate modelling choice, and it matches how percentage spreads behave: a 1% spread costs 1% of whatever arrives, whichever direction you travel. It also means the round trip is not free. Convert $1,000 to yen at a 1% fee, then convert the net straight back at the same rate and fee, and you hold about $980, because the toll is collected twice.

Worked example: $1,000 to yen with a 1% provider fee

The pre-filled values are the worked example: $1,000, the USD snapshot rate of 158.20, and a 1% fee. Clicking Calculate returns a gross of ¥158,200.00, a fee of ¥1,582.00 and a net of ¥156,618.00.

1. Amount: $1,000, rate 158.20→ 2. Gross: 1,000 × 158.20 = ¥158,200→ 3. Fee: 158,200 × 1% = ¥1,582→ 4. Net received: ¥156,618

Reverse check, using the calculator’s other direction: enter ¥158,200 in From Japanese yen mode at the same 158.20 rate with the fee set to 0, and the result is exactly $1,000.00, which confirms the multiply and divide paths are mirror images. Four more real runs of this calculator, covering both directions and three other currencies, are set out below; type any row in and you will get the same figures back.

The snapshot rates, the live refresh, and the rate you actually get

The six snapshot rates are mid-market references: the midpoint between what buyers and sellers quote in the wholesale market, before any retail margin. Official publishers print the same class of rate, the Bank of Japan’s daily foreign exchange rates for the Tokyo market and the European Central Bank’s euro reference rates for euro crosses, and none of them is a rate a traveller can transact at.

CurrencySnapshot: 1 unit in JPY100 units in JPY1 JPY equals

EUR, Euro177.2517,7250.005642 EUR

CAD, Canadian Dollar111.3011,1300.008985 CAD
SGD, Singapore Dollar123.1512,3150.008120 SGD

The Refresh live rates button fetches the current dollar-based rates from a free exchange-rate feed, works out each currency’s yen cross rate from them, rounds to two decimals and loads the set into the calculator for this session. If the fetch fails, the snapshot stays in place and the message under the button says so. Either way, the refreshed figure is still mid-market: your provider’s quote will sit a little below it, which is exactly the gap the fee field exists to measure. For pairs that never touch the yen until the last step, working the cross out yourself first is what the cross exchange rate calculator is for, and if a quote arrives already inverted, the reverse conversion rate calculator flips it into the yen-per-unit form this page expects.

Converting the neighbours: euro and pound pairs

Two of the six built-in currencies have busy lives away from the yen as well. Money that starts in euros and ends in dollars, for a US invoice or a refund, belongs on the eur to usd conversion calculator, which applies the same editable-rate and fee thinking to that pair, and sterling earnings converted for a US account fit the gbp to usd conversion calculator. Come back here the moment a yen leg enters the journey, because neither of those pages prices the JPY side.

What competing converters miss

Yen conversion is served by big, polished tools, and each of them stops one step short of the number you actually receive:

  • XE’s currency converter: genuinely live mid-market rates, inverse figures and handy conversion tables for every pair. Its own small print concedes you will not receive that rate when sending money, and the converter offers no way to model the margin: the fee is invisible by design.
  • Wise’s converter pages: honest about Wise’s own send fees, because the page is a funnel into Wise transfers. Useful if you will use Wise, useless for pricing your own bank’s quote, and the rate field is not yours to edit.
  • Converterhub and the per-amount pages (CurrencyConvert.online and similar): live rates, rate-change tables, alerts and charts, one pair at a time. None of them deducts a provider spread, so a traveller comparing a card quote against the page still has to do the fee maths on paper.
  • The gap this page fills: a yen-centred converter that runs both directions for six currencies plus any rate you type, lets you overwrite the rate with the quote in front of you, and prints gross, fee and net as separate lines, with the inverse rate for quick price checks in Japan. The snapshot is labelled as a snapshot instead of being dressed up as a live rate.

Frequently asked questions

The six built-in rates are a snapshot recorded when this page was prepared: USD 158.20, EUR 177.25, GBP 208.95, AUD 110.60, CAD 111.30 and SGD 123.15 yen per unit. They are starting points, not live quotes. Press Refresh live rates to pull current mid-market rates from a free feed, or paste your provider’s own quote over the rate field for an exact conversion.

Banks, card networks and exchange shops add a spread to the mid-market rate, commonly 1% to 3% by the usual rule of thumb, and some add a flat fee on top. Run the calculator once at the mid-market rate with a 0% fee to see the headline number, then again with your provider’s spread in the fee field: the net line is what you will actually receive.

Yes. Switch the direction to From Japanese yen, keep the same foreign currency selected, and enter the yen amount. The calculator divides by the rate instead of multiplying, and the fee is deducted from the foreign-currency gross, so the net is the amount that would land in your account.

US dollars, euros, British pounds, Australian dollars, Canadian dollars and Singapore dollars carry snapshot rates. For anything else, choose OTHER and type any 1-unit-to-JPY rate into the rate field: Thai baht, Korean won, Swiss francs or a crypto unit all work the same way, because the math only needs the rate.

Use the mid-market rate for quick comparisons, travel budgets and checking whether a yen price is fair. Use your provider’s exact quote, with its fee or spread entered, for money you are actually about to send or exchange, because that net figure is the only one that will match your receipt.

It states what one yen is worth in the foreign currency: at 158.20 yen per dollar, 1 yen equals 0.006321 dollars. It is the quickest way to price something in Japan: a ¥10,000 rail pass is about 10,000 times 0.006321, roughly $63.21, before any card fee.

Yes, the same multiplication and division apply at any size, and the results use thousands separators so large yen figures stay readable. The fee percentage matters more as amounts grow: a 2% spread on ¥10,000,000 is ¥200,000, which is why comparing the net line across two providers beats comparing headline rates.

The yen has no minor unit in cash, so a bureau would round to whole yen. The calculator keeps two decimals so you can compare quotes precisely and so the reverse conversion returns your starting amount exactly; round the net down to whole yen when you are budgeting physical cash.
