Transfer Rate Calculator

Published onAugust 29, 2025 Updated onOctober 15, 2026 4:42 am

Your internet plan says 500 Mbps, the download crawls at 40 MB/s, and the progress bar claims three different finish times. The confusion is almost always units: bits versus bytes, and the overhead your connection actually delivers versus what the box promises. This calculator solves the transfer triangle in all three directions (speed, time, or file size), converts every unit for you, and models real throughput with your connection’s overhead and efficiency so the answer matches what you will actually see.

Transfer speed–
Transfer time–
File size–
Effective speed (after overhead and efficiency)–

How to use the transfer rate calculator

Pick what you want to find. Transfer speed: enter the file size and how long the transfer took. Transfer time: enter the file size and your connection speed (or pick your connection from the preset list). File size: enter the speed and the time available. Overhead and efficiency are optional refinements: overhead is the share of bandwidth eaten by protocol headers and retransmits, efficiency is how much of the rated speed you actually sustain. The calculator reports all three quantities plus the effective speed and a bandwidth-utilization rating.

Formula

The three modes are one relationship rearranged:

Speed = (file size x 8) / time (bits per second)
Time = (file size x 8) / effective speed
Size = (effective speed x time) / 8

Effective speed = rated speed x (efficiency / 100) x (1 - overhead / 100)

The x8 converts bytes to bits, because speeds are sold in bits per second while files are measured in bytes. Size units use binary multiples (1 GB = 1,024 MB) and speed units use decimal multiples (1 Gbps = 1,000 Mbps), matching how storage and networking actually label them.

Worked example

You copy a 5 GB movie file to a USB drive and it takes 250 seconds. Speed mode: (5 x 1,073,741,824 x 8) / 250 = 171,798,692 bits per second = 171.80 Mbps, about 21.5 MB/s.

Now flip it: how long to download that same 5 GB file on a 100 Mbps line running at 90% efficiency? Time mode: effective speed = 100 x 0.90 = 90 Mbps; time = (5 x 1,073,741,824 x 8) / 90,000,000 = 477.2 seconds = 7:57 min, rated Excellent at 90.0% utilization.

And the reverse: one hour at a full 100 Mbps moves (100,000,000 x 3,600) / 8 = 45,000,000,000 bytes = 41.91 GB.

Common connection speeds

ConnectionTypical speed1 GB download takes about
DSL10 Mbps13 minutes
Cable100 Mbps80 seconds
Fiber500 Mbps16 seconds
Gigabit fiber1,000 Mbps8 seconds
Wi-Fi 62,400 Mbps3 seconds
USB 3.05 Gbps2 seconds

(1 GB here = 1,024 MB; times assume full efficiency.)

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Mbps and MB/s?

Mbps is megabits per second; MB/s is megabytes per second. One byte holds 8 bits, so divide by 8: a 100 Mbps connection downloads at 12.5 MB/s before overhead. ISPs advertise bits, browsers usually show bytes, and that factor-of-8 gap confuses almost everyone once.

Why is my real speed lower than my plan's speed?

Protocol overhead (TCP/IP headers, retransmits), Wi-Fi interference, an old router, and congestion all take a cut. Try 5 to 15% overhead and 85 to 95% efficiency in the calculator to model a typical home connection honestly.

What affects transfer rates?

The medium (fiber beats copper beats Wi-Fi), congestion on the network, the speed of the storage at both ends (a spinning hard drive caps what gigabit fiber can deliver), and protocol overhead.

How can I improve my transfer rate?

Use a wired connection, upgrade old storage to SSD/NVMe, move closer to the Wi-Fi access point or upgrade it, and schedule big transfers outside peak hours.

What is bandwidth utilization?

The share of your rated speed you actually achieve after overhead and efficiency. 80% or more is excellent; under 30% means something is wrong (bad cable, congested Wi-Fi, throttling) and worth investigating.

Is this the same as heat transfer rate?

No. Heat transfer rate is a physics quantity (watts of thermal energy moving through a material, Fourier's law). This calculator is about data: bits moving across a network or interface per second.

What competitors miss

WayCalculator and CalculatorUltra both ship the same single formula (data in MB divided by time in minutes) with no unit conversion, no reverse solving, and no notion that real connections never deliver their rated speed. EasyUnitConverter converts units but cannot tell you how long a download takes. Nobody models overhead and efficiency, nobody offers connection presets, and nobody rates your result. This calculator solves all three directions of the transfer triangle, converts bytes, bits, and time units for you, presets twelve real connection types from dial-up to NVMe, and folds overhead and efficiency into an effective speed with a utilization rating, so the answer matches the progress bar you will actually watch.
