Annual Leave Hours To Days Calculator

Published onJuly 19, 2025 Updated onOctober 25, 2026 9:16 am

Your payslip states annual leave in hours, but you plan holidays in days, and the two numbers never seem to agree. The Annual Leave Hours to Days Calculator below divides your leave balance by your ordinary hours per work day and gives you the answer in the units you actually book: exact days, full days plus the leftover hours, and weeks away. It also applies your employer’s rounding policy and can price the balance in cash, which is the figure that matters when leave is paid out.

The standard divisor is your contracted day: 8 hours on a 40-hour week, 7.5 on a 37.5-hour week, 7.6 on a 38-hour week. Pick the wrong one and a correct balance looks wrong, which is why the third tab works backwards: if your statement shows both hours and days, it solves for the day length your employer is using. The same tool converts in reverse, from days you want to take into the hours they will cost.

Weeks are counted as 5-day weeks. Payout figures are gross, before tax, at the ordinary rate you enter; some awards and contracts add leave loading on payout, so check yours before relying on the cash figure.

Quick Answer

Quick answer: A leave balance of 92 hours at 7.5 hours per work day is 12.27 days: 12 full days plus 2.00 hours remaining, roughly 2.45 weeks off. Under a nearest-half-day booking policy that is 12.5 days bookable, and at $25 an hour the balance is worth $2,300.00 in cash. On the 8-hour standard the same arithmetic gives cleaner numbers: 120 hours is exactly 15 days.

Key takeaways

  • Days = hours / ordinary hours per day. The divisor is your contracted day, not a universal 8: 7.6 for a 38-hour week, 7.5 for 37.5 hours, 8 for 40 hours.
  • The decimal is not the bookable answer. 12.27 days books as 12 full days with 2 hours left over, or 12.5 days under a half-day policy.
  • Shift length changes everything: 80 hours is 10 days for an 8-hour worker and only 6.67 days for a 12-hour shift worker.
  • If hours and days on your statement disagree with your contract, divide one by the other: the Find hrs/day tab reveals the day length payroll is actually using.

How the conversion works, step by step

One division does the work, and two companion figures turn the result into something you can book. Follow the worked balance through all three.

1

Divide. Days = total leave hours / ordinary hours per work day. For the pre-filled balance: 92 / 7.5 = 12.27 days.

2

Split. Take the whole days as bookable days and multiply back for the remainder: 12 full days use 90 hours, leaving 2.00 hours, which is a short morning, not a day.

3

Stretch. Weeks = days / 5 on a five-day week: 12.27 / 5 = 2.45 weeks away. This is the figure trip planning actually runs on.

4

Round and price. Apply your employer's booking policy (exact, half day, whole day) and, if you entered a rate, read the cash value: 92 hours at $25 is $2,300.00.

The formulas: Days = leave hours / ordinary hours per day. Remainder hours = leave hours - (full days x hours per day). Weeks = days / 5. Reverse: Hours = days x hours per day. Payout = leave hours x hourly rate.

Worked example: 92 hours on a 7.5-hour day

The Hours to days tab above is pre-filled with this case, and every figure below is what the tool returns when you press Calculate.

The other tabs answer the follow-up questions with the same balance. Days to hours, at the 8-hour standard: taking 15 days costs 120.00 hours. Find hrs/day: a statement showing 92 hours as 12.27 days is using a 7.50-hour day, which tells a worker on a 37.5-hour contract that payroll has it right and a worker who expected 8-hour days exactly where the mismatch sits. If you need the hourly rate itself before pricing a payout, derive it from your salary with the annual income to hourly calculator.

Common workday lengths, and why the divisor decides the answer

Ordinary hours per day means your contracted hours in one day, before overtime and excluding unpaid breaks. It is the single input that moves the result, as this spread of standard balances shows.

Leave balanceAt 7.6 hrs/day (38-hr week)At 7.5 hrs/day (37.5-hr week)At 8 hrs/day (40-hr week)At 12 hrs/day (shift work)

152 hours20.00 days20.27 days19.00 days12.67 days
160 hours21.05 days21.33 days20.00 days13.33 days

The 152-hour row is the classic Australian four-week entitlement on a 38-hour week: exactly 20 days at 7.6 hours, but 19 days if you wrongly divide by 8. Part-time staff should stay in hours for anything payroll will deduct and convert to days only when requesting time, because their daily pattern often varies across the week. Paid leave sits inside a wider set of workplace absence rules: the federal framework for protected leave is the Department of Labor's Family and Medical Leave Act guidance, while ordinary vacation leave has no federal entitlement behind it in the US, as the Department of Labor states in its vacation leave summary, so contract and state rules decide. Tracking how absence itself is running is a separate measure, covered by the absence rate calculator.

Rounding policies and the payout question

Employers rarely let anyone book 12.27 days. Policies round the booking, the balance, or both, to the nearest half day or whole day, and the calculator's policy selector shows what each does to your balance before you ask. The detail that costs people hours is where the rounding lands: rounding each booking up to a whole day across ten short absences can consume several more hours than rounding the balance once. Check the handbook wording, and if it rounds per booking, take leave in blocks that match the policy where you can.

Payouts: when employment ends, unused leave is commonly paid at hours x ordinary rate: the worked balance is $2,300.00 at $25 an hour. Some jurisdictions require the payout by law: California treats vested vacation as wages that must be paid out, as the state's Division of Labor Standards Enforcement vacation FAQ explains, and some awards add leave loading, often 17.5%, on top. Federal workers accrue under a separate published schedule in the Office of Personnel Management's annual leave fact sheet. Hours you worked beyond your contract are a different balance again, priced separately with the unpaid overtime calculator, and daily break deductions change your true hours per day in ways the 30 min lunch calculator works through.

What competing calculators miss

We reviewed the top PTO and leave converters before rebuilding this page. Nearly all of them perform one division and stop.

Winning move 1: three directions, including the diagnostic one. Rivals convert hours to days, and a few convert back. None in the set solves for the day length itself, yet that is the question behind most "my statement looks wrong" searches: 92 hours shown as 12.27 days means a 7.5-hour day, and the Find hrs/day tab answers it directly.

Winning move 2: the policy applied to the number. One competitor prints a rounded-days column; none lets you choose the policy. Here exact, half-day, and whole-day results sit on the same output, because booking rules, not decimals, decide what you can take.

Winning move 3: bookable split, weeks, and cash in one result. A decimal day count leaves three questions unanswered: what can I actually book (12 full days plus 2 hours), how long can I be away (2.45 weeks), and what is it worth if it is paid out ($2,300.00). This result answers all three next to the conversion.

One limit applies to every tool in this comparison, including this one: the calculator converts the balance you enter. Whether that balance accrued correctly under your contract, award, or state law is a payroll question, and a persistent mismatch is worth raising with the hours-versus-days evidence this page produces.

Frequently asked questions

It depends on your workday. At 7.6 hours per day (a 38-hour week), 152 / 7.6 = exactly 20 days, the classic four-week entitlement. At 8 hours per day it is 19 days. Enter 152 and your own hours per day in the calculator for your exact figure.

Use your contracted ordinary hours per day: 7.6 for a 38-hour week, 7.5 for a 37.5-hour week, 8 for a 40-hour week, and your shift length (10 or 12) for shift work. Using the wrong divisor is the most common reason a leave statement looks wrong when the balance is actually right.

Because payroll is dividing by a day length you may not expect. Use the Find hrs/day tab: enter the hours and days exactly as printed, and the result is the day length being used. 92 hours shown as 12.27 days means a 7.5-hour day; shown as 11.5 days it would mean an 8-hour day.

Many do, either per booking or on the total balance. The rounding policy selector models all three common rules on your actual balance: 12.27 exact days becomes 12.5 days at the nearest half day and 12 days at the nearest whole day. Check whether your employer rounds each booking, since that quietly costs more hours over a year.

Usually at your remaining hours times your ordinary hourly rate: 92 hours at $25 an hour is $2,300. Whether payout is required depends on your contract and jurisdiction: some states treat vested vacation as wages that must be paid, and some awards add leave loading on top. Enter your rate in the calculator to value your own balance.

Divide your days by 5 for a five-day week. The worked balance of 12.27 days is 2.45 weeks. The calculator shows the weeks figure on every Hours to days result, because weeks are the unit holidays are planned in.

Because their hours per day vary by roster. A part-timer working three 7.6-hour days converts 45.6 hours to 6 working days, but the same hours spread across shorter shifts mean more calendar days away. Keep the balance in hours for payroll accuracy and convert per request, using the day length of the days you will actually miss.

Yes, with the Days to hours tab: days x hours per day. Fifteen days at 8 hours a day costs 120 hours of balance. Use it before requesting leave to check the balance covers the trip, especially under a whole-day rounding policy.
